Shulou(Shulou.com)06/03 Report--
On April 24th, 2019, Rancher Labs (hereinafter referred to as Rancher), a leading container software provider, officially released k3OS, which is the industry's first extremely lightweight operating system specifically for Kubernetes, with extremely low resource consumption, simple operation and second start-up, which can greatly simplify Kubernetes operations in low-resource computing environments, improve the security of Kubernetes operations, and fully enable edge computing scenarios.
K3OS and K3s are perfect partners.
K3OS, and Rancher's recently released K3s (the lightest Kubernetes release in history) are a perfect match. Rancher's K3s, released at the end of February this year, is the lightest Kubernetes distribution in history and is designed for R & D and operations personnel running Kubernetes in resource-constrained environments to meet the growing demand for small, easy-to-manage Kubernetes clusters running on x86, ARM64, and ARMv7 processors in edge computing environments. K3S is simple, lightweight and easy to use. It has received a lot of attention since its release. In less than 2 months, GitHub has nearly 6500 stars.
The release of k3OS is a further step forward in the ease of use and security of K3s, providing more concise and effective interaction and operation experience for K3s users. In k3OS, both the Kubernetes cluster configuration and the underlying OS configuration use the same syntax, which is similar to CRD in Kubernetes. In this way, developers and operators will be able to install and upgrade K3s and the underlying operating system at the same time. At the same time, k3OS will also enable developers and operators to really benefit from the "infrastructure as a code (infrastructure-as-code)" model, resulting in reliable and repeatable cluster deployment. This method of operation will greatly simplify the experience of administrators, while keeping K3s secure in a low-configuration computing environment.
"although Kubernetes can be installed on any Linux distribution, it can be complicated to patch or upgrade Kubernetes separately from the underlying operating system. Misconfiguration or security vulnerabilities in system services can endanger the entire Kubernetes cluster. K3OS users never have to worry about unplanned operating system upgrades, and it only takes one step to apply security patches to the entire software stack." Liang Sheng, co-founder and CEO of Rancher, said: "as a combination of Linux system and Kubernetes distribution, K3s running on k3OS has the smallest * surface and the simplest upgrade process compared to all Kubernetes installations in the industry."
The first Kubernetes operating system, created for edge computing
K3OS can be used in public clouds and virtualized clusters, but beyond that, it is especially valuable in environments where computing resources, represented by edge computing, are extremely limited.
Jin Feng Huineng, the world's second-largest wind turbine manufacturer, has been working closely with Rancher on the development of a new lightweight Kubernetes release, K3s, since last year. We believe that today's release of k3OS is the next step in technological development that will help us realize our vision of a fully automated and highly secure Kubernetes cluster in thousands of marginal locations around the world. Zhang Wei, Deputy General Manager of Jin Feng Huineng
The main features of k3OS include:
Quick installation: k3OS takes only 10 seconds to start, and at the same time K3s is available immediately without time.
Simplified configuration: Cloud-init supports automatic configuration of K3s during system boot startup to quickly and easily convert it from a general-purpose image to a configured K3s instance.
Simplify system patches and upgrades: administrators can manage Kubernetes and Linux distributions through a common set of YAML files and use Kubernetes to coordinate the deployment of operating system upgrades.
K3s is built into the built-in k3s:k3OS, and some necessary system services (such as ssh, udev, bash, and iptables) are built into the distribution image without the need for a package manager.
Ubuntu kernel: Rancher relies on the excellent work of Canonical's Ubuntu Server Kernel team to ensure timely security updates and comprehensive device support.
Multi-architecture support: k3OS now supports x86x64, and support for ARM will be completed soon.
GitLab provides a complete solution for the entire DevOps lifecycle. By partnering with k3OS and K3s, GitLab will continue to devote itself to cloud native technology, allowing users to control the deployment and configuration of Kubernetes and Linux through a single operating process. GitLab is looking forward to implementing the landing deployment of k3OS and K3s with more customers. -- Brandon Jung, vice president of GitLab Alliance, all open source, welcome to use
