This article will explain in detail how to use FVWM custom Linux desktop, the editor thinks it is very practical, so share it for you to do a reference, I hope you can get something after reading this article.

The FVWM window manager was born out of the modification of the 1993 TWM. After several years of iteration, a highly customizable environment has been created that can configure any behavior, action, or event. It supports custom key binding, mouse gestures, themes, scripts, and so on.

Although FVWM is ready for use after installation, the default distribution provides very few configurations. This is a good foundation to start customizing your desktop environment, but if you only want to use it as a desktop, you may want to install a full configuration version released by other users. FVWM has several different distributions, including FVWM95 that mimics Windows 95 (at least in appearance and layout). I tried FVWM-Crystal, a modern theme with some modern Linux desktop conventions.

You can install the FVWM distribution you want to try from the software repository of the Linux distribution. If you cannot find a specific FVWM distribution, you can install the basic FVWM2 package, and then go to Box-Look.org to download the theme package manually. This requires more work, but less than building from scratch.

After installation, please log out of your current desktop session so that you can log in to FVWM. By default, the session manager (KDM, GDM, LightDM, or XDM, depending on your settings) will continue to log in to the previous desktop, so you must overwrite that desktop before logging in.

For GDM:

Select your desktop session in GDM

For KDM:

Select your desktop session with KDM

No matter what theme and configuration you use, FVWM will display at least one menu when you click the left mouse button on the desktop. The content of the menu depends on what you install. The menus in the FVWM-Crystal distribution include quick access to common preferences, such as screen resolution, wallpaper settings, window decorations, and so on.

Like almost everything in FVWM, you can edit what you want in the menu, but FVWM-Crystal features the menu bar. The application menu is located in the upper-left corner of the screen, and each icon contains a menu for the relevant application launcher. For example, the GIMP icon represents an image editor, the KDevelop icon represents an integrated development environment (IDE), the GNU icon represents a text editor, and so on, depending on the programs you install on your system.

FVWM-Crystal also provides virtual desktops, taskbar, clock and application bar.

For background, you can use the wallpaper bundled with FVWM-Crystal, or you can use the feh command to set up your own wallpaper (you may need to install it from the repository). This command has several options for setting the background, including-bg-scale fills the screen with the image zoom of your choice,-bg-fill fills the screen directly without zooming the image, and so on.
