I first came into contact with SNMP in 2005. As a network developer for many years, I have been working on network-driven design, TCP/IP stack development, and application layer development for a long time. I remember that I took over a network rack management project. At first, I didn't take it seriously. I thought it was just an application layer thing, no big deal. So, I found a book about network protocol, but that book is not just about SNMP, but there is only a chapter about SNMP, which should be said in more detail, but I found that I didn't understand something, which I didn't expect.

As a beginner, there are some things in SNMP that are difficult to understand, such as its head is variable. Like other protocols, even very complex TCP protocol headers basically belong to fixed field headers.

Furthermore, the number 5 must be an integer in C, but what about the data types defined by SNMP? The data type it defines appears to be an integer, but it will be different in different scenarios, which is also a difficult link for beginners to understand. Of course, some of these things will not be listed here.

So, when it comes to SNMP, it's really complicated. Some people may say, since it is so complicated and I am a beginner, then I will not learn. But SNMP is really important, the network from the original Internet, to the mobile Internet, and then to today's popular Internet of things and artificial intelligence, the network is getting bigger and bigger. With such a huge network, it is inevitable that there will not be problems. What should we do if something goes wrong? We need effective management to make the network run efficiently. If it is managed by people, it is believed that how many people are not enough, and it is not necessarily efficient. So we want the machine to manage the machine itself! How to manage it? Our ancestors designed SNMP for us. We need a year? Two years? Or even longer to learn it? Today, with the rapid development of information technology, it is incredible! How to learn SNMP quickly determines whether we can stand on a higher level.

In fact, SNMP is not complicated, the key depends on how to learn. Maybe we need to be exposed to a lot of concepts in SNMP, which may make us feel boring. I always think that most of these concepts need to be understood simply, and the most important thing is to learn to sort out the data packets in the SNMP communication process and the mechanism of packet generation. We will soon be surprised to find that SNMP is also quite simple. Some people may say, I'm not going to do development, I just want to be a network administrator. What are the responsibilities of a network administrator? View and troubleshoot the network, right? If we can analyze the data packets of SNMP, it should be very helpful for us to troubleshoot the network.
