Since July 2017, Oracle has changed the previous database software release process and adopted the strategy of annual Release and quarterly updates.

Yearly Release

Change the previous N-year release to an annual release. The strategy released every year can not only provide more new features to users more quickly, but also greatly reduce the number of single software changes and avoid the risk of large version upgrades to the system.

Quarterly Release Update

Oracle will provide quarterly updates every year from July to October. Quarterly updates mainly include query optimizer-related BUG and security vulnerability fixes.

Release Update Revisions

In addition to quarterly updates, release updates will also be released on a quarterly basis, fixes based on defects in the previous RU and includes the latest security vulnerability patches.

Within six months of each quarterly update release, there will be up to two separate update revisions (RUR). For example, Release.Update.1 and Release.Update.2, where "1" and "2" represent version iterations.

RU support will be provided for at least two years after the release of the new annual Release, and each RU will provide two separate RUR support. Therefore, each year Release will have at least a 3-year update support cycle.

Release is the last two digits of the year of release, such as the newly released 18c, indicating that the version was released in 2018

Update stands for RU or beta version, which was released as 1 in the first quarter and added 1 in each quarter thereafter

Revision represents the RUR version, based on a revision of a RU, with a maximum of two RUR per RU
