If you want to know the future of an important technology, first look at what developers are doing. With this in mind, some field insights into the entire IoT community can be gained in a new survey of more than 1700 Internet of things (pdf) conducted by Eclipse Foundation.

Internet of things connection issu

Perhaps not surprisingly, security is at the top of the list, easily surpassing other issues of the Internet of things. More than 1/5 (21%) of Internet of things developers see connectivity as a challenge, followed by data collection and analysis (19%), performance (18%), privacy (18%) and standards (16%).

After becoming the top three Internet of things concerned by developers last year, connectivity rose to second place. At the same time, concerns about security and data collection and analysis actually declined slightly from a year earlier. (concerns about performance, privacy and standards are also much higher than last year.)

"if you look at the list of issues that developers are most concerned about the Internet of things in the survey," Mike Milinkovich, executive director of Eclipse Foundation, said by email, "I think the connectivity, performance and standards are all outstanding. These are becoming more and more real to the Internet of things projects, and they are gradually getting out of concept and entering the production stage."

"there is connectivity in the Internet of things," Milinkovich continued, "Milinkovich continued." everything seems simple unless you have a sensor in a corner-narrowband or broadband-and physical limitations make it difficult to connect. "

He also mentioned a large number of incompatible technologies, which raised developers' concerns about connections.

Internet of things standards and interoperability

Milinkovich also solved my personal Internet of things problem: interoperability. He explained that "standards are agents for interoperability between products from different suppliers", which is an "difficult goal" in the Industrial Internet of things (IIoT).

"the goal of IIoT is to break out of proprietary silos and reprocess our plant and logistics infrastructure for many years using OSS standards and implementations (the standard set of protocols as opposed to vendor-specific agreements)." He said.

When you deploy applications in this area, different manufacturers use different protocols or non-standard extensions to existing protocols, and machines are unable to communicate with each other, which becomes a big problem.

"this is related to the more powerful requirements not only for open standards, but also for implementing them in the open source stack." "to stay mature, the market needs not only standards, but also out-of-the-box interoperability between devices," Milinkovich said.

"performance is another production-level problem," he said. "when you're in development, you think you know the bottleneck, but when you push into production, you find real-world problems."

Multi-cloud Development of the Internet of things

The survey also shows that in some ways, the Internet of things is very consistent with the larger technology community. For example, the use of public and hybrid cloud architectures in the Internet of things continues to grow. Amazon Web Services (AWS) (34%), Microsoft Azure (23%) and Google Cloud platform (20%) are the industry's leading cloud providers of the Internet of things. If anything, AWS's lead in the Internet of things may be smaller than in other areas, although reliable market share data for cloud providers are notoriously hard to obtain.

But Milinkovich sees the industrial Internet of things as "a huge opportunity for hybrid clouds" because many industrial Internet of things users are very concerned about the latency of data from the smallest chemical plants, which he calls "their gold." He sees factories moving to a hybrid cloud environment, using modern infrastructure technologies like Kubernetes to build around open protocols like HTTP and MQTT, while getting rid of old proprietary protocols.

What is the difference in the development of the Internet of things?

In some ways, the development field of the Internet of things does not seem to be much different from the broader field of software development. For example, the top programming languages of the Internet of things reflect the popularity of these languages, in which C and Java are dominant. (the C language takes the lead in restricted devices, while Java is the first choice for gateways and edge nodes as well as IoT clouds.)

But Milinkovich points out that when developing embedded or limited device development, programmers can interface with the device through any number of esoteric hardware connectors.

"you are using simulators for development, the inherent differences and more complex interactions between the development environment and the goals of the application," he said. "sometimes hardware and software are developed in series, which makes it more complicated."

For example, he explained that building an Internet of things solution might introduce Web developers who use JavaScript and Angular to work at the front end, while back-end cloud developers control the cloud infrastructure, while embedded developers focus on building software that runs on restricted devices.

No wonder Internet of things developers have so much to worry about.
