After months of enterprise trial deployment and evaluation, network expert MetaS witch released version 1.0 of its open source Calico cloud network virtualization software in July last year.

Calico 1.0 integrates with Open Stack through sub-API to eliminate the limitations of data center scalability by enabling secure IP communication between virtual machines, containers, or bare metal workloads.

Andy Randall, general manager of MetaS's witch network business, said, "We look at this from the perspective of those who have been trying to build large-scale cloud applications, and we also see some challenges posed by the virtual networking capabilities of platforms such as Open Stack.

"the challenge is not only scalability, because it's a fairly one-dimensional thing, but also the robustness and diagnosability of the problem when the network enters an abnormal state."

According to Metaswitch, Calico removes the virtual network layer and emulation layer of layer 2 Ethernet statements.

"We've seen the challenges of expanding beyond hundreds of servers in the data center. We've seen challenges where people can't actually route data the way they want it to. So Calico was created to get rid of the entire technology layer of the data center and replace it with something simpler," Randall said.

Metas witch says Calico provides a more efficient way for companies to build a network of data centers than using coverage, tunneling, network address translation, and boarding and boarding ramps.

"there are a lot of players in cyberspace, and many players have Open Stack network solutions. However, they all use some kind of tunnel or encapsulation method to implement virtual networks. In virtual networks, all they have to do is use software to simulate all the workloads connected to Ethernet switches.

"they try to present the workload as if they had their own virtual network. Calico is the only solution, we work at layer 3, and here we don't try and do very low-level analog Ethernet switches.

"but we just said, 'letting all workloads talk through IP and keep traffic in IP instead of encapsulating and tunneling traffic will only greatly reduce the state and simplify the problem.'"

In addition to finance, large network companies and online retail operators, MetaS witch also hopes to find customers in companies building new micro-service application data center infrastructure and create business orchestration technologies around Docker and Open Stack.

"they focus on things like Docker and organizational environments like Kubernetes and Central Circle. Calico stands out because it is well suited for micro-service-type architectures because it brings fine-grained security," he said.

Open stack users can install Calico, which takes over the network capabilities of the default open stack deployment. Calico 1. 0 can be used in freezer, Juno, and Kilo versions of the open stack.

"our idea is that it should be a fairly seamless operator, how it is plugged in and installed. There is a small daemon that will be installed on every host in the network and plugged into any choreographer you are using-that's all. Everything else will work out on its own," he said.

Ubuntu14.04-based installations are supported by standard packs, chef's recipes, or Juju. There is also a red hat enterprise ux7 bag. The certified fuel 6.1 module can be used to support Mirantis distribution.

"interestingly, you can look at people like Google, Microsoft and Amazon. They are obviously bigger data centers than anyone else," Randall said. most of them invent their own technology internally, and most enterprises don't use it.

"in fact, if you look at Microsoft's article on Azure about what they are doing, from an architectural point of view, Calico is very similar, because we are dealing with all the virtual network layers and simulating layer 2 Ethernet statements.

"if you look at large enterprises, how they usually scale, what they do is they have to divide the data center into smaller domains. Typically, you don't see many data centers extending 80 to 100 servers as one domain."

Calico 1. 0 can be downloaded from GitHub or the MetaS Witch website. The company provides support and services for software.

"as a business organization, we provide support services and people can come to us to accept these services. But it is very important for us that the open source version can be deployed on a large scale," he said.

"it's not just a funny joke. If you really want it to work, you have to pay for the commercial version. We don't think this is the way open source projects are, so it's really widely adopted."
