The full name of WDS is Windows deployment Service, which is mainly used in the batch deployment of computer operating systems in large and medium-sized networks. By using WDS, we can manage system images and unattended installation scripts, and provide manual and unattended installation, which greatly increases the speed of installing the operating system.
When you need to install a system for one or two PC, it may not be necessary to use this service, but when you need to install 50, hundreds of PC? Do we still have to use clumsy methods to implement it? Computers are here to provide us with convenience. When you do something over and over again, it's time to consider a different approach. WDS is just one of the ways to achieve it. This article is some personal summary, the use of VMware virtual machine deployment, shortcomings, but also need a lot of advice.
First, the following conditions need to be met for deploying WDS:
1. It is best to use a professional server as the distribution end. If you use an ordinary computer, it may lead to instability in the distribution process and reduce the overall distribution efficiency. The client needs the network card to support PXE function (PXE function is generally supported by computers), and the server and client must be on the same local area network. If you deploy more than 100 computers, gigabit networks are preferred.
2. DHCP: used to assign ip addresses to clients that need to install the operating system. (deployment of DHCP services was mentioned in the previous article, please refer to it if necessary.)
3. AD service: active directory service, which is mainly used for user identity verification (WDS service can be deployed in two ways, "integrated with AD mode" and "independent mode". If you use stand-alone mode, you do not need to install the AD service)
4. The server must have administrator privileges and prepare the system image you want to install. (preferably a pure version, the images downloaded casually on the Internet have been tampered with by others. The service may not be deployed)
OK, with the above requirements, we will begin to deploy the service.
1. Open the server console and click "add roles and functions"
2. Select the server on which you want to install the service
3. Check the necessary services.
4. Click install (the middle pages are omitted, keep the default and click next until you install)
5. On the toolbar of the console after installation, click Windows deployment Service (before that, make sure that the scope of DHCP is defined. The document for configuring DHCP has detailed steps in the previous document, so I won't repeat it here)
6. Expand each node according to the following figure, find the server, right-click the server name, and click "configure Server".
7. Pop up the following dialog box and click the next step.
8. Choose "integrate with AD" or "stand-alone server" here, and I will choose "integrate with AD" here
9. Choose a path here to store the configuration file of the WDS service. It is best not to select the system disk.
10. Just keep the default here
11. Here you need to pay attention to selecting "corresponding all client computers (known and unknown)", and then click next.
12. Click "finish" when the configuration is complete.
13. Then right-click the server name, find "all tasks" and click "start" (in fact, it doesn't matter to start at last, but sometimes you forget to start after deployment, resulting in the failure to successfully deploy the service, so I am used to starting this service first)
14. OK, then right-click "install Image" and click "add installation Image"
15. This step is to define the name of the image group. Just define it yourself. I'll keep it by default here.
16. Click "Browse" here to select the image to install.

18. Find the folder "sources" after opening it, and double-click to enter
19. If the system image has not been tampered with, you will see the file with the extension ".vim" and double-click to select it.

21. Since there are multiple system versions in the image, we only need to check the version we need to install here. If we select all of them, it will affect the efficiency. Here I will choose the enterprise version. (in fact, as long as it is not the home version, the function is similar.)
22. When the deployment is complete, click "finish".
23. Come back here and choose to add a "boot image"
24. The basic operation is the same as "add installation Image", except that when selecting a vim file, select "boot.vim"
25. After confirmation, click next until the configuration is complete.
At this point, the server-side deployment is complete, and now you can operate the client and install the operating system automatically. OK, turn on a computer without an operating system. There are several ways to start a computer, the default is to go to the hard disk to find the operating system, if you can't find the system, then go to the next place, such as: U disk, CD, etc. Here, because the hard disk and other places do not have an operating system, it will boot from the network, which is exactly what we want, saving us from adjusting BIOS), the following interface will appear when the computer boots up:

Right-click the server name in the WDS console, click "Properties", find the TFTP option in the pop-up dialog box, and remove the default check box of "enable variable window". Modify it as follows:

30. Provide the account password of the domain administrator in the pop-up dialog box (if you choose to deploy independently and there is no domain environment, then the user name format you need to enter here is: computer name\ user name)
31. Once confirmed, select the version of the operating system to install.
