We often talk about the word "real-time", such as real-time collection, real-time computing, real-time display, and we also know that most enterprise applications can provide real-time response, which usually means a delay of one or two seconds, or even less, which is irrelevant to human perception. However, in some scenarios, any delay in response time can be catastrophic, and the best example is a self-driving car, where the system behind the self-driving car needs to receive a lot of data and be able to make decisions based on that information immediately. a delay of a few milliseconds may be the difference between life and death.

Recently, Redis's startup Redis Labs announced two new features to support quick decision-making, RedisGraph and Streams, which they say will support true zero-latency systems.

Redis Labs is a very fast-growing company, and its five-year revenue rose 1.4% to about $40 billion, with a net profit margin of 10%, up 3.6% in 2018 and a market capitalization of $193 billion as of August, according to Morningstar. As companies use the product in more core businesses, Redis hopes to go public within two to three years because of its low customer turnover and revenue from each of its customers that is six times higher than when it was initially sold.

RedisGraph, one of the two tools, is a graph database that uses linear algebra and matrix multiplication to perform fast calculations. According to the company, RedisGraph allows users to store and search millions of graphic nodes and edges, as well as perform multiple calculations in parallel. Practical use cases enabled by RedisGraph include identifying pollution sources in a complex supply chain, tracking user behavior to improve recommendations, or analyzing traffic flow on multiple roads at the same time.

Streams, one of the two tools, was originally a new data structure introduced in Redis 5.0. Streams enables monitoring tools to process and perform operations on real-time generated data. Some of the use cases supported by Streams include emotional analysis of social media feeds, processing environmental data to guide the behavior of self-driving vehicles, facial recognition technology, machine learning, evaluating events to detect fraud or cyber attacks, and developing better Internet of things and smart home devices.

What should a truly zero-latency system look like? Madhukar Kumar, vice president of technology and product marketing at Redis Labs, says it's like a conversational user interface device like an Google Home that responds almost immediately when asked to do something. Redis Labs believes that this is the direction of the future. The biggest obstacle for traditional enterprises to achieve a real zero-delay system is the way of data storage and access. Kumar believes that this problem has been solved with the development of science and technology, and technologies such as persistent memory and 5G networks are achieving this goal, and processing power and networks are no longer obstacles to zero-delay systems.
