Anker's smart home brand Eufy Security launched its latest product today on Kickstarter. The $399 Eufy Security Video Smart Lock is a video doorbell and smart lock that is expected to ship to supporters in May 2022 and be fully released in June. According to the company, this somewhat unique 2-in-1 security device specifically uses fingerprint readers to unlock doors and can send alerts using facial recognition when specific people arrive or leave.

With Eufy's $260 Eufy Smart Lock Touch & WiFi and the $200 Eufy Video Doorbell 2K apparent fusion, the Video Smart Lock offers a bit of a bargain compared to the two devices 'shells, but there are obvious problems with the dual product here.

For starters, most people fret about video doorbells, often not realizing they should be pressing the camera somewhere to alert the owner that someone is at the door. With this product, the doorbell button is on the door lock, where the key would normally go. This is likely to cause confusion.

Also, you can't get a better view of your porch by tilting the door lock, and according to my test of the main competitor in this space--the $399 Lockly Vision--the view you get from the camera in the door lock is just nice looking at people, not packages.

There is also no mention of expected battery life. Powering both the door lock and the security camera via Wi-Fi would be a serious drain. Like Eufy's current door locks, the Video Smart Lock will be powered by a rechargeable 10, 000mAh lithium battery pack, but how long it lasts remains to be seen.

But Eufy is nothing if not innovative-its newest standalone doorbell camera has two lenses that can be viewed up and down. As a result, the company may take some tricks to get better viewing angles and longer battery life.

Currently, details available show that the visual doorbell section will feature a 2K camera with night vision, 160-degree field of view and standard rectangular 4:3 aspect ratio, as well as speakers and microphones for two-way calls. PiR and Radar both enable motion detection, Eufy's "body detection" AI should filter out alerts caused by cars, trees and animals.

The lock will be operated by a fingerprint reader or keypad and will have app and voice control. As with other locks, there is no physical key lock. It can also be locked automatically.
