At the annual Snapdragon Technology Summit, Qualcomm unveiled its next-generation flagship processor, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. This is the first chipset to adopt the company's new naming scheme and brand diagram. It will power most of Android's flagship products in 2022 and, as expected, is full of new features and improvements.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is the company's first processor based on 4nm manufacturing process. It has the same ARM's latest ARM v9 architecture as MediaTek's Tianji 9000. There is a 3.0GHz Cortex-X2 kernel with three 2.5GHz Cortex-A710 cores and two 1.8GHz Cortex-A510 kernels. It is said to provide a 20% performance improvement and 30% power efficiency compared to the previous Snapdragon 888 processor.

The chipset, which has an unnamed Adreno GPU, claims to be 30 per cent faster and 25 per cent more energy efficient than last year's product. This should be good news for mobile gamers, as they not only seek faster and smoother performance, but also need to extend battery life. It also has a seventh-generation Qualcomm AI engine, which is now four times faster. It has twice the shared memory and twice the fast tensor accelerator.

Qualcomm further announced a new Snapdragon Sight technology brand for its camera ISP. The new processor has an 18-bit ISP and can capture more than 4000 times more camera data than the previous generation. It can capture still images of up to 200 megapixels and shoot video of up to 8K HDR10+. ISP is so powerful that it can click 200 12MP shots or 64MP still shots in a second while recording video at 8K HDR.

A special feature is to support camera technology that is always online. Qualcomm says it can help in different situations, such as turning off the display when the phone is in your pocket or when someone tries to peek at your phone over your shoulder. It is said to be safe for users because all camera data that is always online is stored locally in the device itself.
