1. Upgrade installation cannot be activated

If there was a genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 running on the system, then after upgrading to Windows 10 through a system update, the system will automatically activate online and create digital rights for the current device to be saved on the server.

Some users' computers are inactive before upgrading Windows 10, and remain inactive after upgrading Windows 10, so Windows 10 cannot be activated. At this point, you need to fall back to the previous lower version, activate Windows with the original version key, and then upgrade to Windows 10 to activate it automatically. If there is no automatic activation after the upgrade, please go to the system Settings Update and Security window and click activate to activate manually (figure 1). If you have upgraded to Windows 10 normally but failed to activate, it may also be because the upgrade server is busy, wait a while to go to the control panel to try to activate.

Tips:

To view the activation status in Windows 7, click the start button, right-click computer and select Properties to view under Windows Activation. The way to view it in Windows 8.1 is to right-click the start menu and select Control Panel, click system and Security, and then click system to view under Windows Activation.

There are also users who run the Windows 10 installation package in the lower version of the system, and do not choose to upgrade the installation, but choose "install now". The installer does not judge the activation status of the previous version, so the installed Windows 10 cannot be activated automatically. At this point, if you enter the original Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 product key, it will prompt "this product key is not available" and generate an error code (error code 0xC004C003, 0xC004F034, or 0xC004F050). In this case, you need to uninstall Windows 10, repair the earlier version of the system, and then upgrade, install and activate.

To ensure a successful activation, restore the factory settings before upgrading and installing Windows 10. To upgrade from ISO or installation media, choose "upgrade this PC" instead of "install now" to ensure that the Windows 10 version matches the currently running system version.

Be prepared, just in case. Please establish the recovery partition and the recovery boot disk before upgrading, and copy the system backup of the recovery partition to the recovery boot disk together, so that you can restore the system if the upgrade activation is not successful and the fallback encounters an accident (figure 2).

two。 Reinstall the activation of Windows 10

Do I need to reactivate after reinstalling Windows 10? This issue cannot be generalized. If the previous Windows 10 was activated using digital rights (see table above), the reinstallation system requires that the key be entered with the option of "skip", and the server's digital rights activation system will be automatically invoked after the installation is completed. However, it must be noted that the original network account should be used to log in, not the new account. If the previous Windows 10 is a product activated by a key installation, you will need to enter a key when reinstalling. Check the activation status by setting → updates and secure → activation before and after reinstallation.

Tip: reset the product key to force activation

Enter the "SLMGR.VBS-REARM" command in the run window, confirm and restart, and enter the product key. Then enter "SLMGR.VBS-ATO" to force activation. If you cannot enter a product key, use the "SLMGR.VBS-IPK XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX" command (replace X with a product key) and restart.

3. New installation activation of new equipment

Product key activation is required to install Windows 10 on a completely new device or a higher version of Windows 10 (such as the Pro version) on a Windows 10 device that already has an earlier version (such as the Home version). The system installed by entering the product key will be automatically connected and activated after the installation is completed.

4. Upgrade activation of preview users

Preview the version of Windows 10 Insider Preview used by members of the experience, as long as the lower version preview version used before the upgrade is active, it will be automatically activated after the upgrade. Installing Windows 10 Insider Preview on a device that does not have Windows 10 active version installed requires the use of a product key. If you want to get a Windows 10 Insider Preview build of * *, but the device is running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you need to upgrade to Windows 10 first using the free upgrade option. After that, go to "start → to set → updates and secure → advanced options", and then select "get Insider build" to become a member of the Windows preview experience program.
