Ensuring the hardware security of CPU chips is an internationally recognized problem that academia and industry have been facing but have not yet solved.
With the development of computer and semiconductor technology, CPU chip has become a highly complex chip. The process of design, manufacturing, packaging and testing involves a global industrial division of labor, so it is almost impossible to supervise all aspects effectively.
In addition, it is impossible to find malicious hardware that can be made up of only dozens of transistors among the billions to tens of billions of transistors that make up CPU.
Hardware loopholes caused by human negligence or technical limitations are even more difficult to find and difficult to prevent.
The traditional method of finding malicious hardware and hardware vulnerabilities by checking the design source code, Netlist, layout and tube core of CPU chips is like looking for a needle in a haystack, which is not feasible at all.
In short, it is difficult to ensure the hardware security of CPU chips.
In 2016, the team of Wei Shaojun and Liu Leibo of Tsinghua University proposed the "CPU hardware security dynamic monitoring and control technology" based on high security and flexible reconfigurable chip architecture.
This technology discovers "illegal behavior" by dynamically and real-time monitoring the "legal behavior" in the running process of CPU, which fundamentally overcomes the difficulties of traditional CPU security risks and technical vulnerabilities that are difficult to be monitored and discovered.
Hardware Trojans, hardware vulnerabilities (such as "circuit breakers", "ghosts"), hardware backdoors, and malicious use of hardware front doors can all be quickly discovered and controlled as needed.
After that, Wei Shaojun's team joined hands with Lan Qi shares to jointly develop the Jindao ®server CPU chip, and the CPU hardware vulnerability protection program developed in cooperation with Qihoo 360.
The Jinja ®server CPU chip is the world's first CPU chip that uses a third-party chip to monitor the processor core hardware at run time, officials said.
The measured results of the demonstration on Hot Chips are also quite eye-catching:
Multiple Jinja ®server CPU chips run at the same time, which can effectively detect more than 99.8% hardware attacks, and the performance loss is only 0.98%.
