Sony has released the Reon Pocket, a small cooling device that can be worn like a portable air conditioner. It is currently broadcast live on Sony's crowdfunding website, with prices starting at 12760 yen ($117,117). SlashGear points out that in addition to cooling you in hot weather, the device can also be plugged into the back pocket of a specially designed t-shirt to keep you warm in winter.

Unfortunately, the delivery date for March 2020 means that Reon Pocket is too late in this year's heat wave. In the UK (it is important to know that we are not prepared for hot weather and the like), the temperature is 38.1C (100.5 degrees Fahrenheit), the second hottest day in the country's history, according to BBC News. I wouldn't give such a small air conditioner.

Crowdfunding is a chaotic area: companies seeking capital often make huge commitments. According to a study conducted by Kickstarter in 2015, about 1/10 of "successful" products met their financing targets but did not actually yield a return. Those who offer, procrastinate, miss deadlines or oversell ideas mean that stores that complete these products are often disappointing.

The best defense is to use your best judgment. Ask yourself: does the product look legal? Did the company come up with any strange ideas? Do you have a working prototype? Does the company mention existing finished product manufacturing and transportation plans? Have you finished Kickstarter before?

Remember: when you support a product on a crowdfunding site, you don't necessarily buy it.

RePocket works by using the Peltier effect, that is, using a small current to absorb or emit heat. You can use its accompanying application to control it, although Gizmodo points out that there are plans to introduce automatic mode in the future. Sony says the device can cool you down by 13 degrees Celsius (23 degrees Fahrenheit) or warm you up by 8 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit), and you can charge it for 24 hours at a time via USB Type-C.

Sony is not the first company to try to make wearable personal thermostats. There are electromagnetic brake waves, which we tried on CES 2018. We also see people heating their clothes while skiing or snowboarding. However, the advantage of Reon Pocket lies in its size. Sony's promotional video shows that it can be worn under an ordinary business shirt.

Of course, nearly a year after the expected delivery date, all common warnings about crowdfunding projects will apply. Reon Pocket is currently only available in. In the meantime, you can always find a cheap tie fan. Of course it's not so high-tech, it seems a little too much, but 10 yuan is really nothing to complain about.
