Traditional deployment scenarios can install a set of database software on a physical host and create multiple instances. We can deploy an Active DataGuard for each set of databases.

If 10 databases are deployed on the server where the main database is located, the server where the backup database is located can correspond to 10 physical backup libraries. Each physical standby library exists independently, and you can switch roles with the corresponding main library as long as the conditions permit.

After upgrading to 12c CDB, migrate the original independent database to CDB in the way of PDB, and do physical ActiveDataGuard at the CDB level to complete the entire CDB database, including all PDB, at one time, without having to do it separately for each PDB. But the problem also arises, can you switch to PDB?

The answer is: no.

The reasons are summarized as follows:

1. Database role only applies to CDB level and does not support PDB. That is to say, PDB is not defined by primary and standby.

2. The execution of switchover and failover will cause the entire CDB to switch roles.

3. Redo logs are managed uniformly at the CDB level

4. Archive logs are managed uniformly at the CDB level

So consider carefully before upgrading, if you use 12c ADG, and each database is required to do switchover or failover, then you can only choose the traditional database mode NON-CDB.
