Cameron and Lauren are engaged and have never met before.

One Sunday night in mid-February, I played Play in the first episode of Netflix's live-action dating show Love is Blind. It puts the date in a pod to get them engaged before they see each other.

In the first few minutes, I went through a phase of doubt, shock, disgust and joy, which also seemed to tear apart the rest of the audience. The contestants talk through the wall next to the small room, trying to build a lasting romantic relationship without knowing whether the other person is "their favorite type." This is crazy. According to Netflix, this is also one of Netflix's most popular programs. I totally understand why.

Sitting on the sofa, I quickly texted several of my colleagues watching TV, begging them to watch it, too, because of the sacred smoke: people cried and admitted their love for each other, but could not see it, after a few days. At least for me, sneaking into love is blind. I'm back on Reality Show, and I can't-- I can't-- I saw it coming. Now that there are so many powerful televisions, why leave precious TV time for those fluffy things?

It's easy to say that despite the popularity of buying a house, 90-day fiance and acne, we're just not in Reality Show mode right now. There were more than 500 scripted TV shows in January and 2019. In 2018, 61% of American adults thought Reality Show was too much, according to Statista.

Love is blind, not even my first Reality Show this year, although it emphasizes that I missed the type. Then I watched the Circle, another show about building relationships without looking at faces. Only in this case, players communicate through a fake social media platform called Circle.

Two programs (actually three, if you are a masked singer) have been discussed to deal with the space between appearance and reality. It's a good material to think about, but like many others, if Twitter is believed, I'm here for a train crash, mostly.

It was a train accident, but it was controllable. Unlike the relentless tumbling of the news cycle or my to-do list, I found a respite in junk Reality Show that had little impact on my world. I like Bojake horsman, which is one of my favorite shows of the past 10 years, but I don't always think that every time I fire my Rocco, there will be a huge survival crisis. When my friend texted me in response to "love is blind", I felt very happy. If you can find something frivolous in life, I say lock it up.

There is one area to explore why circles and love are blind and seem so effective. Critic Hank Steffer wrote: "Love is blind. It provides an almost crazy sample of many popular and novel Reality Show programs." He pointed out that Reality Show programs without commercials are crazier. NPR's "Happy time in Pop Culture" also talks about how cutting ads affects the structure of these programs, making it easier to move from one program to the next. Twenty years later, the first wave of Reality Show is still in its early stages, and maybe platforms like Netflix know how to do it well.

But looking back on the first wave, I don't know if there are any lessons learned from the heyday of bachelors and survivors. I remember reading a column in Entertainment Weekly in 2003 that assumed that Reality Show had rebounded from scripted television, and that its narrative had become a thin excuse for connecting, violence and everything else. He wrote: "our hearts do not yearn for Beowulf's heroism and forgotten heroism, but for blood, prostitution and humiliation." He filmed it in the '90s, just like me and Jordan. The accompanying illustrations show people playing in a tropical environment, surrounded by scripts engulfed by flames.

As mentioned earlier, this situation no longer exists.

However, after spending better time losing my temper with my friends in February, talking about various Reality Show actors and their dubious decisions, I prepared more. Love is a blind reunion, especially on Thursday. When it was over, I knew I still had a lot of good options-plays with Hollywood production value, niche comedies that would never exist in 10 years-but in my opinion, I also liked the more boring Reality Show.
