Sometimes, some gadgets will talk to you intuitively. They bypass parts of the brain that require function or value, based on pure aesthetics.

This customized raspberry Pi network suite is such a device to me. With its sturdy waterproof case, retro component switch and compact orthogonal keyboard, it looks like a computer built for the end of the world. I liked it very much.

It's called the raspberry skin recovery kit, and it's the work of Jay Dorcher, who shared his project at Back7.co. In an email conversation with The Verge, Doscher explained that the enlightening theme of the recovery Kit is related to aesthetics and functionality.

"the doomsday scene is a bit cheeky because the emphasis will be on food, water and shelter," Dorcher said. "but someone has to be able to use and modify it according to their circumstances."

A few years ago, Doscher built an earlier version of Recovery Kit and wanted to improve the old design. The new version is built into a waterproof pelican camera bag with custom 3D printing components that can be fastened into place. Includes a 7-inch touch screen display, built-in battery, 5z6p grid keyboard and Netgear 5-port Ethernet switch, the entire device is powered by raspberry Pi 4.

Even the equipment has cartons lined with copper foil, which is ideal for paranoid people who worry that EM pulses will interfere with electronic devices. You can read more details about the build here, including a complete list of other images and components.

In addition to the doomsday theme, Recovery Kit belongs to a home brewing device called cyberdecks, inspired by the 1984 sci-fi classic Neurowizard (the computer used by William Gibson).

In Neurorover, the network deck is a powerful and compact machine that allows Gibson's console cowboy to access cyberspace anytime, anywhere. Of course, everyone is now equipped with smartphones, but the network deck still conveys some computing dreams: independence and hackers. Modern versions are usually made with small screens and retro keyboards. You can see a bunch of them in the Hackaday and r / cyberdeck sub-editors.

In an emergency, the recovery kit can serve as the core of a portable network.

Doscher says, however, that his doomsday network deck is not only the appearance, but also its structural details do have their uses. For example, each building component has a separate switch, which will save your power in an emergency, while networked devices will enable the recovery kit to be used as the core of a portable network in the event of infrastructure damage.

"if you need to build a separate network in a power-limited environment, ruby Pi can run DNS, DHCP and a Web server that is very similar to a wall-mounted router," Doscher said.

Of course, just knowing how to build something like this may put you at the end of the world. If you have the ability to make computers out of cleaned parts, you will lead the world. It's time to build.
