Problem description

Several virtual machines are run on VMWare Workstation to build a practical training environment for enterprise IT. In the process of actual use, due to the lack of hard disk space in the partition where the virtual machine is located, a virtual machine that is writing data has been prompted that the whole VMWare Workstation can not continue to operate. If you click cancel, the data will be lost, resulting in the interruption of this phase of the trial.

Solution idea

In VMWare Workstation, each virtual machine turned on adds a VMWare Workstation VMX process to the task manager.

If I can know which virtual machine each process corresponds to, I can force an end to a virtual machine that is no longer writing data, and then put it in another partition space to free up space. Then go back to the VMWare Workstation interface and click retry to continue to write the test data and save the completed data.

If you want to know the virtual machine corresponding to the process, you at least need to know its corresponding PID, because PID is unique.

Operation steps

1. Operating environment

VMWare Workstation 15 is installed on Windows10.

two。 Identify virtual machines that can be forced to end and view their corresponding PID

There is no important data on the edge server EDGE01 in the test environment, so it can be forced to end.

Check PID: go to the EDGE01 virtual machine directory, open vmware.log with notepad, and you can see pid=9648 on the first line.

3. View the PID corresponding to the process in the Task Manager

Enter the task manager, right-click any VMware Workstation VMX process, and select Go to details:

4. Locate the virtual machine according to PID in Details

Locate the virtual machine process with PID 9648 in PID, and then right-click to select End task:

5. Move the EDGE01 virtual machine location to free up space and continue the operation

Move the forced shutdown EDGE01 virtual machine to another partition, and then click continue on the VMWare Workstation to complete the data write. If you want the EDGE01 virtual machine to be turned on again, select turn on the virtual machine in VMWare Workstation and select the location. Before booting, we will be prompted whether to copy or move the EDGE01 virtual machine, we choose to move, everything is fine.
