1. Overview of i.MX8M development board

NXP's i.MX8M family of application processors are based on Arm ®Cortex ®- A53 and Cortex-M4 cores with industry-leading audio, voice and video processing capabilities for a wide range of applications from consumer home audio to industrial building automation and mobile computers.

As a design company officially cooperated by NXP, Mill Electronics has launched a development platform MYD-JX8MX series development board based on NXP's i.MX8M series chips to meet the board requirements of this kind of high-performance products. The development board adopts the form of core board and backplane, and provides peripheral interfaces such as HDMI,LVDS (or MIPI), dual camera input (CSI), 4G module expansion (with SIM card holder), WIFI Bluetooth module, multi-channel USB, multi-serial port and so on. At the same time, Mill provided the complete software package and supporting documentation for Linux. The following is to share the details of i.MX8M series development boards:

I.MX8M processor has the following characteristics: 

Multicore processing: Quad Arm Cortex-A53; Cortex-M4FGPU: OpenGL/ES 3.1,3.0, Vulkan, OpenCL 1.2 dual independent display interfaces: MIPI-DSI (4 channels); HDMI 2.0a video playback: 4Kp60 high dynamic range (H.265, VP9), 4Kp30 (H.264), 1080p60 (MPEG2, MPEG4p2, VC1, VP8, RV9, AVS/AVS+, h.263 and DiVX) and MJPEG-8x8  Audio: 6x I2S/SAI (20 + channels, 32 bits per channel @ 384 KHz) SPDIF Tx/Rx; DSD512  dual camera interface: MIPI-CSI (each 4 channels)  external memory interface: LPDDR4, DDR4, DDR3L; Quad SPI  with XIP dual USB 3.0 C  with PHY provides dual PCIe in L1 sub-state, with fast wake-up function from low power mode  has Gigabit Ethernet controller  operating system: Linux OS, Android, FreeRTOS  temperature: consumer electronics (0 °C to 95 °C Tj) Industrial control (- 40 °C to 105 °C Tj)  package: FCBGA,0.65 mm spacing

2.1 introduction of i.MX8M development board

MYD-JX8MX is based on the high-performance NXP i.MX8M series processor design. Including Ethernet, USB3.0, WIFI, and other rich peripheral resources. MYD-JX8MX consists of two PCB pieces:

MYC-JX8MX: standard core board, including processor, DDR,eMMC and Ethernet PHY.  MYB-JX8MX: extended function board, including Ethernet, HDMI, camera interface, USB3.0 interface, audio interface, SD card, 4G module, WIFI, Bluetooth and other functions.

2.3.1 function list of core board

The MYC-JX8MX core board adopts the form of Goldfinger interface, which integrates the main chip, power management chip, EMMC, LPDDR4, gigabit network PHY and other resources. The board adopts 10-layer PCB design to ensure the stability and performance of the system.

2.3.2 backplane product picture and function list

The backplane MYB-JX8MX integrates rich peripheral resources, gives full play to the product performance of i.MX8M, and provides dedicated peripherals for current mainstream product applications. The main feature resources are as follows:

1. Rich audio and video interfaces

(1) two-way video output: 

One channel is HDMI output, which supports 4K resolution HD output . The other main chip MIPI-DSI interface directly leads out. At the same time, the MIPI-DSI is transferred to LVDS circuit in the circuit, and the customer chooses one of the two to use according to the screen situation.

(2) Multi-channel video input:  2-way MIPI-CSI video input interface  expands 4-way USB interface, which can be connected with USB camera as needed.

(3) Audio input and output: 

2. Multiple communication interfaces

(1) support MINI PCIE 4G LTE module extension: the  program supports moving away from EC20 4G module by default, and can use the GPS function in the module.

(2) using PCIE WIFI Bluetooth module: 

Use 8274B-PR PCI-e WIFI Bluetooth module to provide high-speed, high-quality wireless network links.

(3) Gigabit network communication 3. Multiple storage and device expansion

(1) support NVME M.2 SSD extension 

Onboard NVME M.2 SSD expansion module to support high-capacity and high-speed SSD hard disk expansion

(2) using USB TYPE C interface to provide USB 3.0high-speed interface  provides five USB interfaces extended by USB 3.0( one of which is in the pin row and the other four are led by the USB TYPE A pedestal) to facilitate the expansion of USB equipment and improve the performance of USB peripherals.

(3) provide 2 serial ports and lead to SPI interface, so it is convenient to use SPI to expand more serial ports.
