Recently, the author learned at the Hangzhou Yunqi Conference that as an Olympic partner, Intel will work with Aliyun and Olympic Broadcasting Service Company (OBS) to create "Olympic Broadcasting Cloud (OBS Cloud)" to promote the transformation of the media in the digital age with innovative cloud broadcasting solutions.

It is understood that in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Intel and Ali will provide three-dimensional content based on OBS Cloud for the first time, build a more efficient and reliable communication channel for holding broadcasters around the world, bring immersive experience through Intel's powerful virtual reality technology, and bring the audience closer to the scene.

During the conference, the author had the honor to interview Jay Jayaram, the chief technical officer of Intel Sports Division. Let's listen to Intel's understanding and practice of sports.

The right time for the digital transformation of sports events

Nowadays, with the continuous development of cloud computing, cloud broadcasting scheme will change the previous broadcast mode of events and bring more innovative possibilities for the development of the industry.

At present, cloud technology has been gradually applied to broadcast content creation and delivery purposes. In addition to flexibility and scalability, cloud broadcasting solutions can also help reduce the time required for proprietary broadcasters to install, test and debug live broadcasters, as well as the limited space allocated by broadcast centers to licensed broadcasters.

Through the innovative OBS Cloud platform, all licensed broadcasters can obtain clips and images of the Olympic Games more timely, efficiently and safely. At the same time, the OBS Cloud platform has been optimized and improved to enable various proprietary broadcasters to set up their own content creation, management and delivery systems on the platform to meet the extremely high requirements of live broadcasting of a number of sports events.

The OBS Cloud platform is equipped with the latest Intel Xeon scalable processor, which can provide super computing power, high-speed connection to the international broadcast center, easy-to-read cloud storage, real-time monitoring, live video / audio streaming, and media processing.

"Today's sports fans want to have a more immersive and interactive viewing experience," said Jay Jayaram, chief technical officer of Intel Sports. We work with Aliyun and OBS to bring a breakthrough experience to proprietary broadcasters and viewers in a seamless and efficient manner through the OBS Cloud platform with advanced Intel Xeon scalable processors, all of which will be presented at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. "

How to immerse the spectators in it?

The author believes that having a flexible, stable and reliable platform is the basis of the digital transformation of the sports industry, but how to improve the spectators' experience and feelings of sports is the key to the reform of the sports industry.

"the vision of Intel Sports is to give fans or spectators a new perspective through the digital transformation of sporting events," Jay Jayaram said.

In the interview, the author learned that in view of the digital transformation of sports events, Intel focuses on three aspects: first, to transmit all the content of the event to the audience in real time; second, to let the audience have some new ways to watch the event; and third, to increase the interaction between the event and the audience. For the above three aspects, we need to apply different technologies to achieve, such as: VR virtual reality technology, 360-degree playback, the audience can not only watch the game from any angle, but also repeat the playback.

According to Jay Jayaram, taking the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as an example, Intel made 55 hours of VR content, which was filmed, stored and compressed, equivalent to 30 TB of data, and spread to more than 70 countries, eventually landing on spectators, greatly improving the audience experience.

"the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics is the first time we have combined sports events with technology, and we hope to be able to make a larger-scale technical plan at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games." Jay Jayaram said.

Immersive media experience is a new technology, which is a new technology for how to create content, how to edit and adapt. Streaming media and high-quality elements all run on OBS, and Intel's technology can provide a lower latency, faster and more efficient solution for faster transmission of content to companies with broadcast rights such as the Olympics, for them to transmit and play.

Enjoying sports in a new way, Intel offers two major disruptive technologies:

True VR, feel like you are there, choose your own vantage point and enjoy an excellent application experience, including real-time statistics and dynamic audio. Your VR helmet, mobile device and Intel True VR technology turn sporting events into an immersive experience.

True View, watch thrilling replays and highlights from all possible angles, 360 degrees or shoot and replay the most exciting moments from the athlete's perspective.

It is understood that Ture VR is Intel's main tool, and this technology has already been applied in events such as NBA. But that's not all. Based on the 3D technology used in NFL and NBA all-Star Games, Intel built it into the concept of True View. Through the high-definition camera installed in the stadium auditorium, the three-dimensional space in the lens can be redefined and divided into countless data points, the so-called three-dimensional pixels, and these pixels can be reconstructed into a three-dimensional video picture. This needs to be supported by powerful data storage technology.

You know, VR does not fully define an immersive media experience, and Intel will incorporate more data into sports in the future, digitizing any element of the game, including athletes.

From the author's point of view, Intel technology gives spectators a new way to enjoy sports events, so that spectators can watch the events at any time and anywhere, and let them feel this way through a real presentation. This is just a starting point, and Intel hopes to bring more new experiences to end consumers through the combination of these technologies and sporting events.

At the same time, through enabling sports, Intel has truly mastered the market and potential of technology, technology has to be combined with content after all, and sports is obviously one of the best carriers.
