A year later, on October 2, 2019, on another special field, the Chinese broke another nine-year world record-the most authoritative International transaction processing performance Committee (TPC) in the global database field, announced on its website that Alibaba / Ant Financial Services Group's distributed relational database OceanBase broke the world record of database benchmark performance test (TPC-C), with a TPMC value of more than 60 million. Twice the size of the Oracle database, the former world record holder.

New records are still being broken. This year, the total turnover of Tmall's "double 11" reached 268.4 billion yuan, the peak of orders was 544000 / s, and the peak of Alipay database processing reached 61 million / s, setting a new world record again. What is special this time is that it is a record move done on the cloud at 100% of Alibaba's core system.

As the saying goes, amateurs watch the hustle and bustle, experts watch the way. When you cheer crazily for Tmall's "double 11" total turnover to set a world record, can you notice that behind this, in addition to the stable and linear output of Aliyun platform, there is also the excellent performance of OceanBase?

It is "double 11" again.

OceanBase's "three pioneering works"

At the 2019 data Technology Carnival, Yang Chuanhui (Rizhao), chief architect of OceanBase and researcher of Ant Financial Services Group, revealed to the author that during the "double 11" period of Tmall this year, OceanBase database did have "three major innovations": first, this year, OceanBase database changed for the first time from MySQL mode to Oracle mode, which is more suitable for enterprise applications; second, the stand-alone performance of OceanBase database was improved by 50%. Third, the OceanBase database is fully deployed in the container, making it easier to achieve auto scaling. Since the establishment of the project in June 2010, OceanBase database has spent more than 9 years. Since 2011, OceanBase database has been supporting "double 11" and serving favorites on Taobao, and moved to Alipay a year later. From 2014 to 2017, the Alipay traffic undertaken by the OceanBase database gradually increased, and by 2017, 100% of the traffic of all Alipay core businesses, such as Alipay transactions, payments and accounts, were added to the OceanBase database.

2017 was an important turning point for OceanBase database. In this year, OceanBase database "stepped out" of Alibaba and Ant Financial Services Group for the first time and was applied to the Internet core system of Nanjing Bank. According to the development idea of general-purpose commercial database to build a distributed database, the burden on OceanBase is even heavier. Can distributed databases compete with traditional centralized databases in terms of function and performance? Can distributed database be competent for the core business of enterprises, especially the core business of financial institutions?

Stand on the same level

As we all know, TPC-C testing, known as the World Cup in the database field, is a globally recognized general index for evaluating the performance of database online transaction processing. TPC-C has a set of strict evaluation system and standards. It adopts the DebitCredit model led by Turing Award winner Jim Gray. TPC organizes to develop a series of TPC standards, and supervises and reviews the test process and results. The test simulates order creation and payment, stipulating the proportion of five transactions. All the databases tested must be tested first and then the performance, which requires the system to run stably for a long time (8 hours smoothly, at least 2 hours performance fluctuation is less than 2%). According to Yang Chuanhui, TPC-C has a strict audit process, after pre-planning, test preparation, on-site pre-audit, final audit, and finally a 60-day publicity period. OceanBase is the first distributed non-shared relational database audited by TPC-C. It has been audited for more than half a year, and a total of 3 auditors and 2 auditors have passed the joint audit.

In particular, it is worth mentioning that this TPC-C test is implemented with the support of Aliyun standard cloud resources, changing the previous way that high-performance test results rely on dedicated centralized storage devices and dedicated high-end servers, and set a new world record with a completely distributed software architecture.

Yang Chuanhui said that TPC-C testing is a difficulty for distributed databases. Because transaction processing, that is, transaction ACID (atomicity, consistency, isolation and persistence) is the fundamental requirement of the standard, and this has always been achieved through the traditional centralized system, distributed database to meet the transaction ACID with distributed, multi-computer architecture, which is a huge challenge. OceanBase breaking the performance record in the test fully shows that the distributed database has the ability to compete with the top traditional stand-alone database in the industry in terms of function and performance, and the two sides stand on the same level.

Take the road of opening up

OceanBase has been fully verified by the market.

At the Cloud Congress in 2018, OceanBase 2.0 was officially released, along with the announcement of built-in Oracle compatibility. In October 2019, OceanBase released Oracle compatible version 2.2 and broke the world record in TPC-C testing. The evolution of OceanBase, its outstanding performance in function and performance, and its successful application in many domestic financial institutions show that distributed database can meet the core business needs of banks and other financial institutions. However, we should also be soberly aware that financial institutions not only focus on technical indicators such as function and performance, but also pay more attention to the stability and reliability of the business and avoid security risks as far as possible. From this point of view, the distributed database needs to be honed and verified for a long time, and it needs to be adapted, developed and optimized for specific business scenarios. It needs to be reiterated that the "double 11" and TPC-C tests have proved that from the technical index, the distributed database is available and fully verified by the market. At present, in the core business database of financial institutions, DB2 and Oracle databases occupy the dominant position. Although the distributed database grows rapidly and represents a subversive force, objectively speaking, the traditional centralized database and distributed database will continue to coexist for a period of time. However, distributed database is a new track. Chinese manufacturers engaged in database development 20 years ago were struggling because there were no large-scale and applicable business scenarios, and because there was no one to use them, the development and evolution of database products fell into a vicious circle. Now the situation has changed a lot. In China, there are not only world-class applications such as "double 11", but also large-scale enterprise cloud transformation needs. Chinese database manufacturers have the natural advantages of technology self-research and expanding large-scale business. Not only those traditional software vendors are involved in the database field, more and more cloud service manufacturers are also building their own databases. "OceanBase developed with the business of Alibaba / Ant Financial Services Group. Alibaba's technology accumulation in cloud computing and platforms, as well as the development of new business scenarios such as Alipay and Ant Financial Services Group, have enabled Alibaba / Ant Financial Services Group to develop new distributed databases on their own." said Yang Chuan-hui.

As to whether OceanBase will be open source, Yang Chuanhui's answer is very positive: "the strategy of OceanBase is not open source, but open." The earliest open source version of OceanBase is still at 0.4, and now the version tested by TPC-C is very different from the previous open source version. Just like Oracle database is not open source, but through various forms of open communication, communication, training and so on, a large number of DBA are even more familiar with, understand and master Oracle database than MySQL. What OceanBase calls openness, similar to Oracle, is designed to enable more DBA to understand and master OceanBase more deeply. In fact, what enterprise users need is not source code, but enterprise services that can solve their business problems.
