Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--
According to the latest statistics, there are about 300 Linux distributions, almost all of which can be run as a server system. In the early days of Linux, almost all distributions were "omnipotent" distributions, and specialized Linux server distributions were not hot, and at the beginning of the 21st century, every company that wanted to cash in Linux began to offer server distributions.
Linux distributions rarely copy each other. This is obvious from the following five most popular Linux server distributions, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.
I. Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Red Hat's products are introduced first, mainly because the company will be a company with annual revenue of $4 billion this year, and although it is no longer a Linux-only company, everything it does is still based on its Linux operating system. However, even before Red Hat set its sights on the hybrid cloud, RHEL was still the first choice for enterprise Linux because of its considerable security and reliability.
The "$4 billion a year" part is also important. Red Hat is by far the most powerful pure open source software company, with huge revenue to fund research and development to maintain a leading position. It also means the company is unlikely to disappear any time soon, as corporate customers rely on stability.
II. Ubuntu Server
With a quick look at the distributions running on the Amazon Web service, we can speculate that Ubuntu is probably the most widely used Linux server distribution in cloud computing. Currently, there are more than 200000 instances of Ubuntu running on EC2, while Amazon's own Linux version is less than 90, 000 and Red Hat's is less than 20, 000.
However, don't jump to conclusions based on these numbers, because Ubuntu is free, and Red Hat's Linux server distribution and SUSE are more expensive. Even so, the figure is impressive. And there are probably a lot of Ubuntu running on the local server-- for the same reason.
Ubuntu's success as a Linux server distribution is impressive because Ubuntu is a relatively new player in this field. It was born in the first decade of this century, and competitors have been "rampant" for a long time. Maybe it started for free, but it wasn't recognized for free. For example, over the past year, it has become more and more attractive because its general Linux package makes it easier to install software. It is worth mentioning that Red Hat then launched a similar feature, called Flatpak.
III. CentOS
Well, this distribution is basically copied from RHEL. But when it was first released in 2004, it had a direct impact on the server world.
Before that, most shared hosting companies built their Linux products on Red Hat. With the introduction of CentOS, this situation changed almost overnight. Why? Because it is basically a copy of RHEL, but does not need to support the contract. This is very attractive to hosting companies that do not need external support, which makes CentOS a good way to cut costs.
In 2014, Red Hat acquired it and continued to retain almost all of its major developers. Officially, the distribution is still independent and managed by an independent board of directors, and these developers work for Red Hat's open source and standards team, not RHEL. CentOS received the same patch as RHEL, but with a slight delay. Some third-party vendors also support CentOS.
IV. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
SUSE is a German distribution that has been in use since 1992 and is about a year ahead of Red Hat and Debian. Before it was acquired by Novell in 2003, SUSE was considered a jewel in the crown of the Linux distribution, mainly because its management and maintenance tool, YaSP, had the best reviews. Under the leadership of Novell, its reputation has deteriorated rapidly, especially among proponents of open source, mainly because of Novell's cooperation with Microsoft, which many believe violates the terms of the Linux license agreement because it exempts some users who infringe Linux-related patents.
Recently, SUSE began to operate as a semi-autonomous business unit of Micro Focus, preparing to make a comeback. Last year, SUSE acquired HPE's OpenStack and Cloud Foundry,HPE and named the two projects, as well as Linux, as "preferred open source partners."
V. Debian
The community-based desktop distribution, known for its free software policy, was developed by a non-profit organization called Software in the Public Interest. As a server operating system, this distribution has always been very popular. There are many derivatives of Debian, and even CentOS is a little weak, because many Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, are based on Debian.
Debian is the standard by which many Linux users measure other distributions. The release is currently in third place in DistroWatch's page ranking. But some people think that this ranking is not very scientific because it is ranked by the number of page clicks.
Summary
The above are the five Linux server distributions worth choosing in 2018 introduced by the editor. I hope it will be helpful to you. If you have any questions, please leave me a message and the editor will reply you in time. Thank you very much for your support to the website!
