A new Android Q leak shows that Google is ready to replicate another feature that iOS users already know and love: facial unlocking.

Many Android phones-including OnePlus's most recent phones-have their own biometric security features, but for Android Q, it seems difficult to integrate into the operating system.

Native support for facial unlocking means that more mobile phone users will be able to take advantage of this security feature, while handset makers will have to skip fewer obstacles to get a proprietary version of the system.

With XDA developers, an in-depth study of the leaked Android Q version of code was conducted, and the results were very instructive:

In the leaked Android Q AOSP build, we found dozens of strings and multiple methods, classes, and fields related to face recognition in the framework, SystemUI, and setup APKs.

...

From the string we found in the framework-res APK of Android Q related to facial unlocking, the most important line is about the error message displayed when the device does not have facial recognition hardware. This tells us that Android Q does want the device to have a hardware facial recognition sensor, which is different from the face unlocking function on most modern smartphones from companies such as Xiaomi, Huawei / Honor and OnePlus.

Of course, this doesn't mean that every phone that supports Android Q supports facial unlocking-the facial unlocking function depends on the necessary hardware available. But the good news is that Google makes it easier for handset makers to implement security features.
