The authorization method of SQL 2016 is a bit complicated, as described below:

1. Version: there is no difference in software features between the standard version and the enterprise version, but the standard version has the following restrictions:

A) maximum memory recognition of 64GB

B) CPU can identify a maximum of 4 cores and a maximum of 16 cores

C) the cluster only supports 2 hosts

On the other hand, the enterprise version has no above restrictions.

2. Software authorization method:

A) according to physical CPU Core authorization, one authorization is required for every 4 Core, and there is no limit to the number of connected users (CAL). This authorization supports both Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition.

B) according to the number of physical servers (OS), each server (or each OS) is authorized with 15 user connections (CAL), and excess users need to purchase a separate CAL. This authorization method only supports the standard version.
