­SUSE recently announced the launch of the development of the SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE) 15 operating system, which entered a closed testing phase this week. Highlights of SLE 15 include support for easier installation of modules and extensions, use of software packages throughout the SUSE environment, support for multiple scenarios, architectural support for 64-bit, IBM System z (s390x), ARM64 (AArch64) and Power LE systems, as well as cloud, virtual, physical, host and guest environments.

­in SLE 15, SUSE decided to use the Linux Kernel 4.12 kernel with GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) 7 as the system default compiler, using OpenSSL 1.1.x and Python 3.6 by default. It also supports Perl 5.26, Ruby 2.5, TLS 1.3, OpenJDK 9 and PHP 7.x.

­in this update, Firewalld has replaced SUSEFirewall2 as the default firewall. Chrony has been used as the default NTP (Network Time Protocol) deployment scenario, and 389 Directory Server has replaced openLDAP as the default LDAP server.
