This article will explain in detail how linux adds new brushes to GIMP. The editor thinks it is very practical, so I share it with you as a reference. I hope you can get something after reading this article.
How to add brushes in GIMP
Installing a new brush in GIMP requires three steps:
Get a new brush
Put it in the specified folder
Refresh brushes in GIMP
Step 1: download a new GIMP brush
The first step is to get a new GIMP brush. Where did you get it? From the Internet, of course.
You can search for "GIMP brushes" on Google or a privacy search engine such as Duck Duck Go and download one you like from the website.
GIMP brushes are usually provided in .gbr and .gih file formats. .gbr files are used for regular brushes, while .gih is used for animation brushes.
Do you know?
Starting with version 2.4, GIMP makes it easy to install and use Photoshop brushes (.abr files). You just need to put the Photoshop brush files in the correct folder.
Keep in mind that the latest Photoshop brushes may not work perfectly in GIMP.
Step 2: copy the new brush to its location
After you get the brush file, the next step is to copy the file and paste it into the same folder as the GIMP configuration directory.
On Microsoft Windows, you have to go to a folder like C:\ Documents and Settings\ myusername.gimp-2.10\ brushes.
I will show you the detailed steps on Linux because we are a website focused on Linux.
After selecting the brush file, press Ctrl+h in the home directory to view the hidden files in Linux.
Press Ctrl+H to see hidden files in the home directory
You should enter the .config / GIMP/2.10/brushes folder (if you are using GIMP 2.10). If you use another version, you should see the appropriate folder under .config / GIMP.
Adding New Brushes in GIMP
Paste the brush file into this folder. Optionally, you can hide hidden files by pressing Ctrl+h again.
Step 3: refresh the brush (avoid restarting GIMP)
GIMP will automatically load brushes at startup. If you are already running and do not want to close it, you can refresh the brush.
Find "Windows- > Dockable Dialogues- > Brushes" in the main menu of GIMP.
Refresh GIMP Brushes by going go to Windows- > Dockable Dialogues- > Brushes
Find the "refresh" icon in the Brushes dialog box in the right sidebar.
