The priority of the hosts file is higher than that of the DNS server. You can open the hosts file through notepad. There are some examples in the file that tell us how to add a domain name resolution record to it, such as "127.0.0.1 localhost", that is, the name "localhost" corresponds to the "127.0.0.1" IP.

We can add records to the hosts file according to the above format, such as adding a record "202.108.22.5 www" that corresponds to the IP "202.108.22.5".

Let's do a test. Delete the preferred DNS server in the locally connected TCP/IP settings, because there is no DNS server for domain name resolution, so in theory, we will not be able to access any websites. But open the IE browser, enter www.baidu.com in the address bar, and find that you can still visit the Baidu website, which is why the hosts file is at work.

The function of this hosts file is still very powerful, in some situations where the DNS server does not work, we can use it temporarily instead of the DNS server. We can also use it to block malicious websites and map the URLs of malicious websites to some wrong or non-existent IP, then these websites will not be accessible. Hosts files can also be used by some malware to correspond the URLs of some normal websites to the IP addresses of some illegal websites, so check the contents of hosts files frequently, or use software such as hosts security guards to protect them.
