You can now select an action from the drop-down menu-copy, move, rename and delete-but this is not required. Then click Kill Process or Unlock/Unlock All. Killing a process also closes the corresponding application. So whatever problem you're struggling with, it should have been solved.

You can also use Microsoft's own Process Explorer. Another tool for deleting locked files is FilExile. This tool doesn't add itself to the context menu; instead, you need to select the files you want to unlock. FilExile can also be used to delete files whose path is too long to delete.

boot into safe mode

If all of the above doesn't work, or if you're not interested in installing software to solve the problem, then the best way to kill it is to reboot to safe mode. The file you want to delete may have been automatically loaded by an app. Unlocker should still work in this case, but if malware is involved or you don't want to use a third-party tool, you can try this alternative.

If you're running Windows 7 or earlier, restart your PC and press F8 until the Advanced Boot option appears.

Windows 8 users need to press Windows+i to open the sidebar, the electrode power button, and then press SHIFT to restart. Then follow Troubleshooting>Advance Options>Startup Settings and select Allow Safe Mode.
