This tutorial is designed to:

Keep your router system up-to-date at all times to prevent network failures caused by hijacking of routers caused by vulnerabilities.

Note: when using a system upgrade, be sure to make sure that the network business has been safely stopped or transferred.

There are three ways to upgrade the system of Router OS:

I. Winbox updates

II. Manual update

III. Script update

I. winbox updates

Open System > Packages

Click Check For Updates to bring up the following interface:

There are four types of system updates:

Long term: the version is supported for a long time and has the best compatibility.

Stable: stable version, stable version of new features.

Testing: beta version.

Development: development version.

It is generally recommended that Long term version, stability is the king.

Download&Install is recommended for household use.

For commercial users, it is recommended to Download first, and then manually restart the route with System > Reboot after confirming the business.

Restart manually as shown below:

This is how winbox is updated.

Download updates manually

From the official website, see the screenshot of the address.

Drag the downloaded file directly into winbox.

Then it will be automatically uploaded to Router OS.

Confirm the security of the network business, and then restart manually: System > Reboot.

III. Script updating method

The Router OS script updates the system firmware for lazy people, so that we don't forget the security of our routers by scheduling tasks with the help of Router OS.

Remember to use script updates and be careful to calculate your network security window so as not to adversely affect your business, such as when you are backing up your data on the WAN.

Prerequisite: you need to choose whether you want to upgrade the long-term supported version or the stable version in System > Packages > Check For Updates. I chose long term here, and then click OK to exit.

a. Open System > Script, click the + sign, and create a new script:

The code is as follows:

If you have the ability to read scripts, you can understand the above, I will not explain more.

Note: delay 600s is the waiting time for download, fast can be reduced to this value, slow can increase this value.

b. Test our script

Select the script and click Run Script

At this point, we open System > Packages > Check For Updates to see that he is already downloading automatically.

b. Use System > Scheduler to set scheduled tasks to execute scripts

The result is shown in the figure:

PS: if the connection is shown to be timed out, this is very normal, a domestic network problem. We have to choose the second way to update our router.
