The main characteristics of UNIX systems are as follows:

(1)UNIX system is structurally divided into two parts: kernel and shell, and the two are organically combined into a whole. The core part assumes the functions of each module in the system, namely processor and process management, storage management, device management and file system. The core program is characterized by elaborate design, concise and lean, only need to occupy a small space and resident memory to ensure that the system runs efficiently. The peripheral part includes the user interface of the system, system utilities, and application programs through which users use the computer.

(2)UNIX system provides a good user interface, which is easy to use, complete in function, clear and flexible, easy to expand and modify. UNIX systems are used in two ways: as operational commands, the shell language, an interface through which users can interact with the system through terminals; and as user-oriented interfaces that provide services to users not only in assembly language but also in C.

(3) The file system of UNIX system is tree structure. It consists of a basic file system and several removable file subsystems, which can enlarge file storage space and facilitate security and confidentiality.

(4)UNIX system unifies files, file directories and devices. It takes files as character streams without any records for sequential or random access, and makes files, file directories and devices have the same syntax semantics and the same protection mechanism, which simplifies system design and facilitates user use.

(5)UNIX system contains abundant language processing programs, utility programs and software tools for developing software, providing users with a fairly complete software development environment.

(6) Most programs in UNIX are programmed in C language, and only about 5% of programs are programmed in assembly language. C language is a high-level programming language, which makes UNIX system easy to understand, modify and expand, and has a very good portability.

UNIX systems also provide simple communication between processes.
