This article is about how to install the GNOME graphical interface in FreeBSD 7.3.This article is about how to install the GUI. The editor thinks it is very practical, so share it with you as a reference and follow the editor to have a look.

FreeBSD is considered an unknown giant in the free operating system. It is not Unix, but runs like Unix and has a Unix-compatible system API. As an operating system, FreeBSD is considered to be quite stable and reliable. FreeBSD defaults to a command line interface without a desktop environment. If you want to use a desktop environment, you must install it yourself or use a desktop distribution like PC-BSD.

Usually install FreeBSD to choose the recommended minimum installation, and then install other software by compiling source code or pkg_add command after the installation is complete. Graphical interfaces are rarely used, but sometimes some is better than none at all.

During installation, create a default normal user and specify the group as wheel because ssh remotely logs in to disabled root users and only users of the wheel group can su to root users.

Install the chart interface below:

Install gonme and Xorg through the sysinstall command

Configure-> Packages-> CD/DVD-> gnome-> gonme2-2.28.2 Configure-> Packages-> CD/DVD-> X11-> Xorg-7.4_3

After the installation is complete, you cannot run the startx command directly, otherwise the system will not respond after starting the graphical interface.

Edit the / etc/rc.conf file first and add

Dbus_enable= "YES" hald_enable= "YES"

After reboot, if "acd0: FAILURE-unknown CMD..." appears. Simply execute the hal-disable-polling-- device / dev/acd0 command.

Then run the startx command, at least we can use the simple graphical interface of Xorg.

If you use the gnome interface, execute echo "exec gnome-session" > .xinitrc

If you use the kde interface, execute echo "exec startkde" > .xinitrc

Just run startx again.

We can also further customize the graphical interface properties to facilitate the configuration of refresh rate, resolution and so on.

Use the root user to run Xorg-configure to generate the xorg.conf.new file

Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" VendorName "Monitor Vendor" ModelName "Monitor Model" HorizSync 30-107 VertRefresh 48-120 EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Card0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 Depth 24 Modes "1024 × 768" EndSubSection EndSection

Then run Xorg-config xorg.conf.new-retro to test

If a gray grid and X-shaped mouse appear, Ctrl+Alt+Backspace exits

After the test is complete, run cp xorg.conf.new / etc/X11/xorg.conf to update

Compat6x is required to install VMware tools
