Kent Overstreet, a former Google engineer, released a new open source Linux file system called the Bcache file system (Bcachefs).

Bcachefs is a Linux kernel block layer cache designed to provide a faster and more advanced way to store data on the server.

Bcachefs promises to provide the same stability and performance as EXT4 and XFS file systems, while also having the features of ZFS and Btrfs file systems.

Features supported by Bcachefs

Bcachefs supports all the features of modern file systems, including:

Features to be added by Bcachefs

Some of the features in Bcachefs are still limited or not available yet, including:

1. Snapshot 2. Erasure code 3. Inter-layer write-back cache 4. Native support for stacked magnetic recording (SMR) and raw flash

In the future, however, Bcachefs will support all advanced features, including snapshots that let the operating system back up data automatically.

Currently, the Bcachefs disk format has not been finalized, and the code for the Linux kernel has not yet been completed.

The file system initially performed well, and "probably won't swallow your data-but I can't guarantee it," Overstreet wrote in an email to Linux Kernel Mailing List last Thursday.

If you want to try Bcachefs, you can get the code here. But don't expect Bcachefs to finish any time soon, as Overstreet warns that the project will take a long time to complete.
