Samsung today announced a new 43.7MP mobile image sensor (79685480), known as ISOCELL Slim GH1. The sensor, which uses what the company calls ISOCELL Plus technology, is the first sensor capable of handling 0.7m pixels. This is the smallest pixel size in the industry, continuing Samsung's innovative approach in this field. The manufacturer first produced a 1.0m pixel image sensor in 2015. Samsung introduced image sensors with pixel sizes of 0.9m and 0.8m in 2017 and 2018, respectively. As the size of the image sensor shrinks, mobile phone manufacturers will be able to continue to reduce the frame size and increase the screen ratio of the phone.
The above ISOCELL Plus technology enables Samsung's new sensor to produce such small pixels and still collect enough optical information. In the manufacturer's own words, "it can produce bright and vivid photos. In low light conditions, the sensor combines pixels with Tetracell technology to create 10.9 megapixel images and increase the sensitivity to the level that 1.4m pixel image sensors can achieve. For video, ISOCELL Slim GH1 can produce 4K video at the speed of 60fps (3Magne8402160).

Back in May, Samsung launched the 64MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor with 0.8m pixels, and last month released the 108MP image sensor, the first three-bit multimillion-pixel image sensor for mobile devices. The pixel size of the sensor is also 0.8 m.
"Samsung has been stepping up its efforts in pixel technology innovation, from the industry's first 1.0m pixel-level image sensor to the recently launched 64m, 108MP 0.8m ultra-high resolution sensor. We are very pleased that the industry's first image sensor, ISOCELL Slim GH1, which exceeds 0.7m pixels, will enable more stylish, streamlined design and excellent imaging experience to be reflected in future smartphones." -- Park Yonghong, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics Sensor.
The GW1 sensor supports electronic image stabilization (EIS) and phase detection autofocus technology. Samsung expects to phase out image sensors by the end of 2019.
