Let's install Fedora on Oracle VirtualBox step by step.

Step 1: install VirtualBox

If you don't have VirtualBox installed on your system, you can download it from the official website. You can find instructions for Windows, MacOs and Linux. Ubuntu users can refer to this detailed tutorial on installing VirtualBox.

Step 2: download Fedora ISO

If you are not familiar with Fedora, then you need to know about these images.

Fedora IoT is for scalable infrastructure, and Fedora workstation is a mirror with a set of desktop tools for normal GNOME desktop environments. As the name implies, Fedora server is customized for servers or data centers.

If GNOME is not your first choice, you can download a customized version of Fedora desktop with an alternative desktop environment. For this tutorial, I chose Fedora 33 with a GNOME desktop environment.

Step 3: create a virtual machine and configure it

To successfully install and run Fedora, you need at least 20GB disk space and 2GB RAM. However, to get a smoother user experience, it is recommended to double it. On this basis, I will create and configure a virtual machine.

Open Virtual Box and click "New".

Note that the most important option is to set the type to Linux and the version to Fedora (64-bit). If you start typing "Fedora" at the name prompt, VirtualBox will automatically choose the correct settings for you. Although the name doesn't have to be Fedora, it can be anything you like.

* if you can only access the 32-bit version, then you need to enable virtualization on BIOS. If you have an AMD CPU, it is called SVM. The worst-case scenario is that your CPU does not support virtualization. If you're not sure, check this first.

If your settings are similar to mine, click the "create" button.

As mentioned earlier, at least the disk space of 20GB is required to install Fedora. I have 32GB memory on my system, so I allocated 8GB memory. The memory of 3 GB should also be fine.

By the way, the use of memory, the virtual machine only uses memory when running the virtual machine. Otherwise, it will be available for general use.

Make sure the remaining settings match the example, and click the "Create" button.

Allocate 15-20 GB of disk space in VDI format

Before you click the Start button on the virtual machine, you need to load the ISO [CD-ROM] shown below.

Because your virtual hard disk is empty, the virtual machine will boot from this ISO. Think of it as using live USB or disk installation of Linux.

Then, if you have a multicore CPU, it is recommended that you assign 2 or more cores to the virtual machine. You can find the CPU core under the "System" tab. When configuring the system, click OK and start the virtual machine.

Once everything is configured, click the "Start" button to begin the installation.

Step 4: install Fedora in VirtualBox.

If you follow this process correctly, when you start the virtual machine, you will boot directly from the ISO file. When you see a screen similar to the one below, select "Start Fedora" and press enter.

Before you proceed with the installation, it is necessary to define your keyboard layout, your time zone, and the location where the operating system will eventually be installed.

The partitioning process is simple. You divide some free space like the VDI in front of you. It should be recognized automatically.

Select your disk and set the storage configuration to "Automatic". Click "Done" to enter the previous dialog box.

Now you only need to wait 5-6 minutes to complete the installation. When the installation is complete, click the Finish installation button.

The last step is to power off the system. If you are not familiar with the GNOME desktop environment, you can do this as follows.

You must manually unload the ISO file that was loaded in the initial step.

The next time you start a virtual machine using Fedora, you will be prompted to create a user account for Fedora Linux and set a password.

Use the additional features of VirtualBox Guest Additions, such as clipboard sharing, folder sharing, etc.

Guest Additions is designed to be installed in a virtual machine after the guest guest operating system is installed. They include device drivers and system applications that optimize the guest operating system for better performance and availability.

The Guest Additions ISO file is installed as a virtual CD-ROM for installation.

This is a simple process. Just click the device tab, and then click Insert Guest Additions CD image.

When prompted to click "Download", the system will pop up the download Guest Additions image interface.

Shared clipboard

Sometimes you need to move something between the virtual machine and the host host operating system. Shared clipboard / drag-and-drop support will allow you to copy projects on one platform and paste them on another.

To enable this feature, select Settings on the VirtualBox home page and follow the instructions below. The option of "Bidirectional" is the most convenient.

There are two types of sharing:

Permanent sharing, saved with virtual machine settings.

Temporary sharing, which disappears when the virtual machine is turned off. You can use the check boxes in VirtualBox Manager to create temporary shares.

In this tutorial, I will create a permanent shared folder. Add the host system folder you want to share in the VM settings and select the name you want to appear in VM.

The next time you start the virtual machine, the folder should appear as a network drive.

Better video support

Although Oracle VirtualBox provides virtual graphics cards with basic functions, the custom video drivers added by the guest system provide you with ultra-high and non-standard video modes, as well as video acceleration.

With Guest Additions, the resolution of the operating system will be resized dynamically as you adjust the VirtualBox window on your computer.

Finally, Guest Additions can use your computer's graphics card. If you are a gamer or use efficient software in WM, this can make a big difference.

USB and network device sharing

With VirtualBox, users can use a fully functional operating system without having to set it up on different hardware. However, sharing USB and network devices between host and guest machines is not as easy as you might think.

To access USB devices, you will need to install the VirtualBox expansion pack.

In order for VirtualBox to access the USB subsystem, the user running VirtualBox (on the host system) must belong to the vboxuser group. To do this, open a terminal and issue the following command:

After running the command, you should log out and log back in, or restart the host.

In this step, insert your USB drive, and with your VM settings, you should be able to find and add media, as shown in the example.

The next time you start the virtual machine, your USB will be accessible.

Extra hint: save and export the virtual machine so that you can use it later on any system

You may want to use a virtual machine on another computer, or it's time to build a new machine, and you need to keep the virtual machine as it is. With a few simple steps, you can easily export the current settings and import them to another machine.

On the VirtualBox main panel, click file, Export Appliance. If you like keyboard shortcuts, you can simply click Ctrl+E.

Select the virtual machine to export, and then click Next.

The "Format" option requires attention. There are three different options: the open virtualization format Open Virtualization Format 0.9,1.0 and 2.0, which can be an ovf or ova extension.

Using the ovf extension, several files are written separately, while the ova extension merges all files into an open virtualization format archive.

The default format OVF 1. 0 should be fine.
