[Enmo College] data Architecture: a case study of Oracle Sharding Architecture of China Telecom

Oracle launched the distributed architecture of Sharding since version 12.2, which dispersed the original centralized architecture by extending the characteristics of partition tables. After the introduction of this feature, it has attracted the attention of many industry customers.

Oracle Sharding can be regarded as an elastic relational database based on Shared-Nothing architecture, which can be extended horizontally to 1000 independent Oracle database fragments, each of which stores local data of the global table, relying on the original partition technology to split the data.

With sharding, it is natural to have a routing mechanism. Oracle achieves this goal through Shard Directors and Shard Catalog. The best way to access applications is to use partition keys to navigate data fragments.

China Telecom is one of the earliest users in China. At the 2017 Oracle OpenWorld conference, China Telecom shared their applications under the title: Oracle Sharding ofr China Telecom's WeChat IoT Application, which is China Telecom's service system based on Wechat-Wechat by name.

As of 2016, China Telecom has about 215 million online users. The Wechat service platform, which is a part of the BSS domain, has implemented a WeChat-based customer service system.

Q: why use Oracle Sharding as the solution? China Telecom gave the answer.

After reference to peers and test verification, the system was officially launched on June 29, 2017 and ran stably after it was launched.

The architecture of the whole system is as follows. At present, four sets of Oracle RAC are used to form an Oracle distributed architecture with four shards-Shard. The repository and disaster recovery design are not submitted in the figure, and generally speaking, Data Guard should also exist in this architecture.

In the future, China Telecom will rely on this platform to continue to integrate other applications, such as customer service system 10000.

Another typical customer of Oracle Sharding is Dyn, a leading DNS and Email service provider, which typically faces 2 trillion queries in 90 days, generating 1.6 TB/ days of data, with an increase of more than 144 TB in three months.
