The purpose of virtualization is to pool physical resources. In the field of server virtualization, VMware (now acquired by EMC) has been working for many years and dominates most of the market. The newcomers Microsoft and Citrix all want to make a breakthrough.

In the open source community, American Red Hat has been trying to integrate open source resources and form its own set of cloud computing products, the core of which is the KVM virtual machine that has been incorporated into the Linux kernel.

XenServer

XenServer is a Xen-based virtual platform that is installed directly on physical computing nodes and then creates more virtual machines on it. XenCenter is a cloud computing management platform that manages a large number of XenServer-installed servers (computing nodes), networks, storage and virtual machines.

XenCenter manages servers through a pool of compute nodes. Servers belonging to the same pool share storage, preferably machines with the same configuration. Virtual machines in the pool are stored in shared storage, and a virtual machine is allowed to run on any server in the pool.

Red Hat Virtualization (RHV)

This is the KVM-based virtualization platform software released by Red Hat. RHV consists of three main components: virtualization Management tool (Red Hat Virtualization Manager,RHVM), Virtualization Software (Red Hat Virtualization Host,RHVH) and Virtualization Storage (Red Hat Virtualization Storage,RHVS). Where RHVH is installed directly on the physical compute node, and then the virtual machine can be run on the RHVH.

Oracle VM Server

Oracle VM Server is server virtual software issued by Oracle and integrates Linux kernel and Xen, so it is more or less the same as XenServer. The accompanying Oracle VM Manager cloud management tool is developed in Java language, but the cloud architecture in its vision is relatively complex.

OpenVZ

OpenVZ container is a lightweight virtual machine, inside which is a complete operating system environment. Its main purpose is to act as a virtual private server, namely VPS. OpenVZ creates an isolated running environment on the Linux operating system (modifying the Linux kernel on the host). Each running environment has its own IP, Root users, root directory and runtime, but the shared operating system kernel, that is, the operating system can no longer be installed in the container, allowing more applications to be installed. Nowadays, many VPS leasing companies almost use it to create Linux VPS. In the public cloud, more companies tend to adopt containers. Similar open source containers include Linux-VServer, LXC, FreeBSD jail, and Solaris Containers.

VirtualBox

This is the stand-alone version of the virtual machine software released by Oracle, which is a replacement for VMware Workstation and can be installed on Windows, Linux, Mac OX X and Solaris operating systems. Windows, Linux, FreeBSD operating systems can be installed on virtual machines created by VirtualBox. VirtualBox supports virtual machine snapshots, sleep and grouping, virtual machine import and export, virtual machine cloning, and so on.
