In addition to the Server Core and GUI versions of Microsoft's newly released Windows Server 2016, there is also a new version of Windows Nano Server tailor-made for the cloud, similar to Server Core, but lighter and more streamlined than Server Core, with only a few hundred megabytes, and of course much fewer security patches are needed for OS.
For Windows Nano Server 2016, deployment on physical servers or virtualized platforms is supported. The current Nano Server deployment method is different from the Server Core or GUI version, and there is no traditional installation wizard to choose from. Instead, the VHD (first-generation virtual machine) or VHDX (second-generation virtual machine) image file is generated by packaging in the form of WIM files and packages, and then the image is mounted by creating a virtual machine through Hyper-V.
1. Download the image
1.1 Windows Server 2016 evaluation version is now available for download and provides a 180-day trial. The official download link is as follows:

Three options are included in the evaluation version download page, as follows:
ISO: provides a complete Windows Server 2016 installation package (including Nano Server)
Nano Server VHD: provides a VHD image of Nano Server
Virtual Lab: provides a link to visit Microsoft Virtual Lab
two。 Create a Nano Server virtual machine from the downloaded VHD image
2.1 download Nano ServerVHD
2.2 after the download is complete, you will have the following two files
2.3 double-click "NanoServerDataCenter.vhd" to extract the file and specify the path to the decompression
2.4 generate the following VHD image file after decompression
2.5 create a new virtual machine in Hyper-V, because Microsoft provides direct download of VHD image, so choose "first generation" when choosing the type of virtual machine.
2.6 on the "Connect Virtual disk" page, select "use existing Virtual disk" and click "Browse" to select the VHD image you just extracted.
2.7 after the virtual machine is created, it is as follows:
2.8 after powering on the virtual machine and entering the interface of WindowsNano Server, as follows:
2.9 Press F11 to set the local administrator password
2.10 after setting the password, enter the Nano ServerRecovery Console page, which is also a local management tool, which can be used for some basic local configuration.
3. Create a VHDX image
For example, in the second part, although Microsoft directly provides the VHD image of Nano Server, a series of configurations such as hostname, network and password are needed after creating the virtual machine. Then we can customize the Nano Server file in the Windows Server 2016 ISO image to create the VHDX image and make some custom configurations.
3.1Mount the Windows Server2016 image in the form of a CD-ROM drive. Of course, you can copy the NanoServer folder in the ISO directly, but the location of the specified MediaPath is different when you create the image later.
Navigate to the Nano Server folder path and import the Power Shell module
Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned
Cd J:\ NanoServer\ NanoServerImageGenerator\
Import-Module.\ NanoServerImageGenerator.psd1
3.3.Use the following script to create a custom VHDX image based on Nao Server (for example, the following script can customize the addition or reduction of relevant parameters)
New-NanoServerImage-Edition Standard-DeploymentType Guest-MediaPath J:\-BasePath F:\ Nano2\ Base-TargetPath F:\ Nano2\ Nano2.vhdx-ComputerName Nano2-InterfaceNameOrIndexEthernet-Ipv4Address 192.168.20-Ipv4SubnetMask 255.255.255.0-Ipv4Gateway192.168.8.1-Ipv4Dns 192.168.8-Verbose
3.4 set the administrator password according to the prompt
3.5 creating VHDX image
3.6 relevant files and folders will be generated in the corresponding path. We need to create a virtual machine based on the generated VHDX image.
4. Create a virtual machine
4.1 create a VHDX image according to part 3 to create a second generation virtual machine
4.2 also select "use existing virtual disk" on the "Connect Virtual hard disk" page, and add the VHDX file generated in part 3.
4.3 create and open the virtual machine as shown in the following figure
4.4 enter the account password and enter the console Nano Server Recovery Console managed locally, and select "Networking"
4.5 press enter to go to the network settings page and select the network card for
4.6 after pressing the Enter key, you can see that the information of the network card is exactly the network information that we configured.
4.7 Let's take a look at the disk size occupied by only 529m
4.8 We allocated 1GB memory, but we can see that the memory requirements required are only 153MB.
