Install win10 and macos dual systems in the SSD removable hard disk. After the installation is completed, boot through the removable hard disk to achieve the following results

▷ can access the win10 system on a removable hard drive on a non-macbook computer.

▷ on the macbook computer, you can choose to enter the win10 system or macos system on the removable hard disk.

Preparatory work

The following preparations are very important and must be done in advance.

▷ mobile hard disk: the author uses SSD solid-state hard disk with brand name Samsung T5 and 1TB capacity.

▷ is a computer with windows system. The author uses Acer notebook computer, model V3-571G, and system win8.1.

▷ a macbook computer with macos, the author uses the 2016 macbook pro 15 inch (with touch bar), the system is macOS Catalina (10.15)

▷ a usb wired mouse: if you plan to use win10 on macos, you need to prepare a usb wired mouse because neither the keyboard nor the touchpad can be used before installing the bootcamp driver

▷ downloads "DiskGenius" on the windows computer (from the official website). The version I downloaded is 5.2.0. The trial version is enough. No registration is required.

▷ downloads "WTG accessibility" on the windows computer (from the turnip head IT forum). The version downloaded by the author is 5.0.1.0.

▷ downloads the win10 installation package "cn_windows_10_multiple_editions_x64_dvd_6848463.iso" on the windows computer and unzips it, because all you need to install win10 is install.wim (in the sources directory)

▷ downloads the macos installation package "Install.macOS.Catalina.10.15.1.03.dmg" on the macbook computer, which can be downloaded on the "extreme Apple" website. After the download is finished, open it on both computers, drag the .app file into the "application", and then you should see such an icon in the "launcher", as shown in the figure.

▷ downloads the "bootcamp driver" on the macbook computer (used to run the driver needed to run windows on the macbook computer) and downloads it through bootcamp (boot conversion assistant) (if you want to run windows on any macbook computer, download the bootcamp driver on this macbook computer. If you do not plan to run win10 on the macbook computer, you can ignore this step). As shown in the figure, leave it first after downloading, and then copy it to the removable hard disk later.

When loaded, there is a directory called "WindowsSupport", which contains the bootcamp driver

Note: the macos version number installed on the removable hard drive needs to be the same as the current macos version of macbook. If the former version is lower than the latter, the installer will directly indicate that the version is too old to install.

Step1. Clear partitions and convert to GPT

If there is data in the mobile hard disk, please back it up first, and then delete all partitions of the mobile hard disk. You can use DiskGenius to operate, and convert the mobile hard disk format to GPT (that is, the GUID partition table type). The final effect is as follows

Step2. Install win10

To install a win10 system using "WTG accessibility", you must select "UEFI+GPT", as shown in the figure

Then click "deploy", which automatically makes the necessary partitions and installs win10 to the removable hard drive. Note: the win10 system disk (that is, disk C) takes up all the capacity of the mobile hard drive, but it doesn't matter, because you can resize the partition through DG after the installation is complete.

Wait a moment, as long as "the image is being applied" appears in the log, it means that everything is going well (if it doesn't show up for a long time, turn off the "WTG assist tool" and start over), and you can continue to wait, as shown in the figure.

If the installation is successful, the write complete window appears, as shown in the figure

At this point, win10 has been successfully installed on the removable hard disk, and you can restart the computer for verification and system initialization. You can also work with this article to wait for the macos to be installed.

Step3. Compress win10 partition capacity

Because the "WTG assist tool" directly uses the whole hard disk capacity to install win10 when partitioning, so next, you need to compress the win10 partition capacity first, otherwise there is no space to install macos.

Use DG to "resize" the third partition of the removable hard disk (the ntfs where the win10 is located) to 200GB, as shown in the figure

Don't rush to "save", because we will continue to create 2 partitions.

Step4. Create 2 partitions

Before installing macos, you need to divide it into two areas, which are used for

▷ macos partition, this article gives 500GB capacity

▷ exFAT partition, which is used to store bootcamp drivers. The capacity cannot be lower than that of bootcamp drivers (the size of bootcamp drivers in this article is more than 800m, so it is recommended to give at least 1GB capacity). This paper allocates all the remaining capacity of mobile hard drives to it.

First, create a partition for 500GB to install macos (never mind the partition format at this time, because it will be formatted again on the macbook computer later)

Second, use the remaining disk capacity to create exFAT partitions (this partition format is compatible with both windows and macos reading and writing, and can support files larger than 4G)

Don't forget to click "Save changes"

Finally, let's take a look at the results of the partition.

Step5. Place the bootcamp driver in the exFAT partition

Connect the removable hard drive to the macbook computer and place the pre-loaded bootcamp drive (that is, the "WindowsSupport" directory) in the exFAT partition of the removable hard drive.

Step6. Format macos partitions

Open the built-in disk tool in macos, select the partition where macos is installed, and format it (that is, "erase") into APFS format

Step7. Install macOS

Open the installation package prepared in advance on both computers, as shown in the figure

Click "restart" to start the formal installation of macos, as shown in the figure

After the installation is complete, the system configuration will be initialized

At this point, macos has been successfully installed on the removable hard disk.

Step8. Verify dual system

If all goes well, you will get the following results

Connect the ▷ mobile hard disk to a non-macbook computer and boot from the mobile hard disk (select the one with UEFI). As shown in the figure, you will enter the win10 directly.

▷ removable hard disk is connected to macbook computer. Press option for the boot time, and you can choose to enter win10 or macos in the removable hard disk.

Attached. Win10 initialization and bootcamp driver installation

First initialize win10 with a non-macbook computer by booting with a removable hard disk (if you use a macbook computer to initialize win10, it will be troublesome because there are no drivers at all)

After initialization, shut down the computer, connect the removable hard drive to the macbook computer, boot from win10, connect the usb wired mouse, and enter the WindowsSupport/BootCamp directory in the exFAT partition.

Dual-computer Setup.exe for driver installation

After the installation is complete, open the device Manager to confirm that the drivers have been installed.
