Recently, when a colleague was upgrading Exchange for a customer, he encountered the following error when installing Exchange 2013 CU17 because he could not open Exchange CU17 except PS after the update was completed:

How to fix it?

As you can see from the error message, the Exchange Server 2013 installation is trying to retrieve the system mailbox named "SystemMailbox {bb558c35-97f1-4cb9-8ff7-d53741dc928c}". This error message is caused by a system mailbox that has no mailbox database associated with the mailbox. I've seen this, and you haven't decommissioned your Exchange server yet. To verify this problem, run the following Exchange Management Shell (EMS) cmdlet.

Get-Mailbox-Arbitration | ft Name, ServerName, Database-Auto

As you can see, I have two mailboxes that do not have mailbox databases assigned. In the active Directory, these accounts exist in the default user OU. To resolve this issue, remove these accounts from the active Directory and wait for AD replication. After AD replication is complete, rerun cmdlet to verify that the system mailbox has been deleted from Exchange Server.

After the synchronization is complete, try to install again and the installation is successful.
