Casper: POS consensus mechanism

Casper, arguably the most famous and widely anticipated Ethereum project, proposes a more modern proof-of-stake (PoS) model to replace Ethereum's traditional proof-of-work (PoW) algorithm. Plasma subchains can move faster and charge lower transaction fees because operations on subchains do not need to be replicated throughout the Ethereum blockchain.

Sharding: fragmentation

My third favorite Layer 2 extension for Ethereum is Sharding. As its name suggests, Ethereum sharding borrows some ideas from scalable architectures in modern NoSQL databases. In essence, Ethereum shards break down the entire network state into partitions, each containing its own independent state and transaction history. In this system, a specific node will only process transactions in a specific shard, so the total transaction throughput completed in all shards will far exceed the current volume of transactions completed in a single main chain.
