There are two types of databases:

1. OLTP: heavy throughput and high concurrency; foreground application, facing customers.

2. OLAP: recalculate. Greenplum belongs to OLAP; backend data and is intended for business managers.

Greenplum is a relational database cluster, which is actually a logical database composed of several independent database services. Unlike OracleRAC's Shared-Everything architecture, Greenplum uses the Shared-Nothing architecture, and the whole cluster consists of many data nodes (Segment Host) and control nodes (Master Host), where multiple databases can run on each data node. To put it simply, Shared-Nothing is a distributed architecture, with each node relatively independent.

In a typical Shared-Nothing, all resources (CPU, memory, disk) on each node are independent, each node has only a part of the total data, and can only use the resources of this node.

Greenplum application scenario

Greenplum data engine is a software solution for the new generation of data warehouse and large-scale analysis and processing. Its biggest feature is that it can still support large-scale high-performance data warehouse and business intelligence query without high-end hardware support. Greenplum shows excellent performance in the application of data warehouse and business intelligence, especially in the processing of massive data.

Traditional database focuses on transaction processing and pays attention to the simultaneous two-way operation of multi-users. under the requirement of ensuring immediacy, the system handles data allocation, reading and writing and other operations through memory, and there is an IO bottleneck. On the other hand, the analytical database is based on the real-time multi-dimensional analysis technology to simulate and summarize the data from many angles, so as to get the information and knowledge contained in the data. Although Greenplum is a relational database product, it has the main characteristics of fast query speed, fast data loading speed and fast batch DML processing, and its performance can increase linearly with the addition of hardware, so it has very good scalability. Therefore, Greenplum is mainly suitable for analysis-oriented applications, such as building enterprise-level ODS/EDW, data marts and so on.
