Navicat Monitor is a secure, simple and agentless remote server monitoring tool. It has a powerful function to maximize the effectiveness of your monitoring. The monitored servers include MySQL, MariaDB and Percona Server, and are compatible with cloud databases such as Amazon RDS, Amazon Aurora, Oracle Cloud, Microsoft Azure and Aliyun. Navicat Monitor is a server-based software that can be accessed from anywhere using a web browser. Through network access, you can easily and seamlessly grasp the status of global servers around the clock.

One of the main functions of database monitoring is to capture potential problems before they develop into real problems. To this end, Navicat Monitor for MySQL/MariaDB provides advanced root cause analysis that enables you to find in-depth information when problems occur. This feature is part of the alerts feature.

The alert details screen provides an overview of the selected alert, including its summary, timeline, metric chart, and so on. Navicat also maintains alert history, which allows you to browse alert reports, open specific alerts, assign them to users, or select multiple alerts at a time.

However, perhaps the most useful feature of Navicat Alerts is the ability to notify you via email, SMS, SNMP, or Slack when warnings or serious conditions occur in your infrastructure. This article will introduce you to learning how to set up custom alerts.

Set up Alert Policies

In Navicat Monitor for MySQL/MariaDB, you can set custom alert thresholds to monitor the infrastructure and receive alerts when defined threshold rules are reached. For example, when the CPU utilization is more than 90% and 30 minutes. You can also customize thresholds to trigger alerts for specific instances and groups, and set to whom alert notifications are sent.

An alarm is triggered when the monitored metric exceeds a specified threshold within a certain duration. You can enable or disable alerts and change their thresholds and inheritance settings. To configure the alert policy, go to Configurations > Alert Policy.

The alert type table displays all available alerts and their details. There are three types of alerts: System, Security and Performance (system, Security, and performance).

If we want to enable CPU usage alerts, we will click the "CPU Usage" tag in the table row. (you can also configure multiple alerts at the same time by checking the box next to each alert and then clicking the Configure Alerts button. )

You can see that Navicat provides default values for each alert. For example, CPU uses alerts to define warning conditions for 70% capacity and key conditions for 90% capacity. In addition, a threshold is triggered when the warning or critical state lasts for at least 5 minutes. When triggered, an email notification is sent to all users of the database.

Suppose we want to raise the threshold and send an email to DBAs 10 minutes after the warning or emergency exists, we can modify the alert details as follows:

We can even send notifications to other parties by including a comma-separated email list in the alternate email address field.

Finally, click the Save button to update the alert settings.

Set up notification

Navicat Monitor provides three options for sending notifications when alerts are issued in monitored database instances or when system problems occur while in use. The three options are: emails, SNMP traps and SMS messages. To configure alert notifications, go to Configurations > Notifications.
