Alphabet, Google's parent company, continues its mission to bring the Internet to underserved areas through its Loon balloon-based Internet service. Earlier this year, the company reached the milestone of more than 1 million hours of balloon stratospheric flight hours and signed a contract to provide commercial services in Kenya. Today, Loon announced that it will also bring the Internet to Peru.

Loon will work with local infrastructure operator Internet Para TodosPer (IpT) and use its high-altitude balloons to provide Internet access in some areas of Loreto, Amazon, Peru, where about 200000 people live. According to the company, 1/4 of people in the region lack 3G or better Internet access, while many people in rural areas do not have reliable mobile services at all.

I have worked in Peru for a long time. Dragon's balloons provided Internet access after the Peruvian earthquake in May. It also provides emergency Internet access in northern Peru after El Ni ñ o in 2017.

The system runs on a balloon network that acts as a "floating base station tower" at an altitude of 20km (12.4 miles) and transmits the provider's 4G services. High-altitude balloons can avoid dangers such as air traffic, weather events and wildlife.

However, before Peru can launch balloons, Loon and IpT must first obtain regulatory approval from the Peruvian Ministry of Transport and Transport.
