Editor to share with you what is the difference between independent cloud disks and availability zone FAQ, I believe most people do not know much about it, so share this article for your reference, I hope you will learn a lot after reading this article, let's learn about it!

Independent cloud disk and availability zone FAQ

What is a stand-alone cloud disk?

An independent cloud disk refers to a cloud disk that can exist independently relative to the ECS. It can be mounted and unmounted freely between different ECS instances in the same availability zone, and cannot be mounted across regions or availability zones. The basic characteristics of independent cloud disks are the same as those of cloud disks, and the data reliability is the same as that of cloud disks. Compared with cloud disks, stand-alone cloud disks take into account both data security and the flexibility of ECS instance disk changes.

What is an availability zone?

The availability zone refers to the physical area where the power and the network are independent of each other in the same area, and the fault will be isolated in an availability zone. If the private network is interconnected between the availability zone and the availability zone in the same region, the network latency of ECS instances in the same availability zone is smaller. Fault isolation between different availability zones allows independent cloud disks to be mounted and unmounted freely between different ECS in the same availability zone.

If your application requires higher availability, it is recommended that you create ECS instances in different availability zones.

What is the difference between a stand-alone cloud disk and a current disk?

Temporary disks and cloud disks are generated directly with the instance purchase and cannot be uninstalled, while independent cloud disks can be purchased separately and mounted to the instance. Once mounted, there is no difference between using and temporary disks and cloud disks.

What is the relationship between server application and availability zone selection?

If your application requires higher availability, it is recommended that you create ECS instances in different availability zones. If you need lower network access latency between your ECS instances, it is recommended that you create ECS instances under the same availability zone. Independent cloud disks can only be mounted in ECS instances in the same availability zone

Can a single cloud disk be mounted to multiple ECS instances?

I can't. A separate cloud disk can only be mounted to one instance in the same availability zone at a time, and cannot be mounted across the availability zone.

How much do I charge for independent cloud disks?

Independent cloud disks are charged by quantity. If the account balance is insufficient, the service of independent cloud disks will be stopped.

Can independent cloud disks be mounted to prepaid instances?

Yes, independent cloud disks can be mounted to any instance in the same availability zone in the same region, including prepaid and postpaid instances.

Will the disk performance of independent cloud disks and ordinary cloud disks be the same as data security, and will disk performance be improved?

Independent cloud disks and ordinary cloud disks are the same, there is no difference, there will be no improvement in disk performance.

Can I uninstall unneeded disks on my prepaid instance?

Not yet.

Why is my stand-alone cloud disk released with my instance?

When mounting an independent cloud disk, you can decide whether to release the disk with the instance or retain the independent cloud disk when the instance is released. The system will execute it according to your choice. Of course, you can change this option at any time through the console and API.

Why can't I find the instance I want to mount when mounting a stand-alone cloud disk?

Make sure that your instance and disk are in the same availability zone in the same region. Independent cloud disks can only be mounted in the same availability zone in the same region, or make sure that your instance is not released.

Why can't I find the disk I want to mount when I choose independent cloud disk mount in this instance list?

Make sure that your instance and disk are in the same availability zone in the same region. Independent cloud disks can only be mounted in the same availability zone in the same region. Or make sure your stand-alone cloud disk is not released.

Will the snapshot be retained when I delete the disk?

Manual snapshots are not deleted, but whether automatic snapshots are deleted depends on the configuration, see automatic Snapshots released with disk.

Why is there no automatic snapshot of my independent cloud disk?

A stand-alone cloud disk implements the policy of creating a new automatic snapshot only when it is in use (when mounted to an instance), but the automatic snapshot originally created will be gradually deleted over time.

Why can't I buy stand-alone cloud disks?

Because you do not have the permission to purchase and use independent cloud disks, you can submit your application through a ticket, and we will open it for you step by step.

How many independent cloud disks can be mounted on an instance?

Each instance (including prepaid and postpaid) can have up to 16 data disks, including all disk types.

Will my disk lose data when I uninstall a stand-alone cloud disk?

It is strongly recommended:

Under the Windows operating system, in order to ensure data integrity, it is recommended that you suspend all read and write operations to all file systems on the disk, otherwise unfinished read and write data will be lost.

Under the Linux operating system, you need to log in to the instance to perform unmount command line operations on the disk, and then enter the console to "uninstall" the disk after the command is executed successfully.

Can I uninstall my system disk?

No, but it can be replaced. See replace the system disk.

What is the device name?

The device name is the location of the disk on the Ali CVM on the disk controller bus. The selected device name corresponds to the disk device number in the Linux environment; the order of the disks in the Windows environment is the same as that in the disk manager.

Why can't I find the operation of resetting the disk, changing the operating system, and rolling back the snapshot on the console?

At present, these functions have been changed to: reinitialize the disk, replace the system disk and roll back the disk.

Was my snapshot lost when I reinitialized the disk?

No, I won't. Both manual and automatic snapshots are not lost.

Do I lose my snapshot when I replace the system disk?

No, I won't. Note, however, that replacing your system disk is equivalent to replacing your system disk, disk ID will change, and snapshots of your original system disk (manual and automatic snapshots) will not be used to roll back the new system disk. On the other hand, the user snapshot of the original system disk is retained (the automatic snapshot is deleted), and a custom mirror can be created.

Why can't my data disk choose a temporary disk?

Temporary disk and cloud disk can be selected only if the system disk is a temporary disk. If the system disk is a cloud disk, only cloud disk can be selected for the data disk.

What are the application scenarios of independent cloud disk servers?

It is mainly used for fast data transfer and data preservation between different instances.

Can I create a stand-alone cloud disk using user snapshots?

Select an existing snapshot to create an independent cloud disk directly. The capacity and data of the newly created independent cloud disk is exactly the same as that of the snapshot, and the capacity size cannot be changed.

Is it necessary to mount an independent cloud disk after it is purchased and mounted to the mount point of the target instance?

After the "disk mount" is successfully executed, you also need to log in to this instance to "format the partition and mount the new partition" on the mounted disk. For more information, please see mounting the data disk in the tutorial.
