This weekend, I started a windows10 VM image that hasn't been used for a while. Because they are essentially files, virtual machine images tend to be stationary and powered off unless you need them. Whenever I need a new machine, I use the standard windows10 initiator template VM. The template has not been updated yet.

Just like reactivating VM, I run Windows Update. It made some progress, but then failed. I tried Windows Update again. I received another failure message.

You can try some techniques to fix updates in case of failure. Fortunately, in my case, the tactics I used succeeded. I will tell you that if the update is still invalid, I will share some additional steps I will take with you.

Make a backup

I know it should be self-evident, but I'm going to say it anyway. Make a backup. Before rummaging inside your system, it's always good to make sure you can recover the data.

1. For VM users: replace with updated VM

I often preconfigure older VM, which contains a large number of custom adjustments, installed applications, and other elements. As a result, starting with a new Windows image is often quite time-consuming. However, if you are able, rather than trying to update the version of Windows that was originally installed in 2016 or 2017, start with a new Windows image that was updated in October 2018.

3. Attempt to troubleshoot WINDOWS updates

Microsoft actually provides Windows Update troubleshooting tools for windows 10. I found that the easiest way to find it is to type "troubleshoot" in the search box.

Because I am using an older version of windows 10, the screen above will be displayed. If your windows 10 is from the most recent update, you will see the following screen, which you can also access by going to Settings > updates and Security > troubleshooting.

Of course, it's not a good idea to simply use Windows for anything like this, so I go back to Windows Update and run it again.

A few hours later, I got my results. Previous failed updates have been completed correctly, and my system is completely *.

4. Pause update

This is an interesting trick, very counterintuitive. Go to Settings > updates and Security > Windows Update, and then click the Advanced options button. Assuming you are using a relatively new version of windows 10, you will see the following screen:

Slide the pause update switch. Restart your machine. Then, once the machine is fully started, return to the screen and slide the pause Update switch back to off.

If you tell Windows to pause updates, you will clear all downloaded updates. Go ahead and try Windows Update again. I hope it works. This is easier (and less stressful) than deleting the SoftwareDistribution directory from the Windows directory, which is my next suggestion.

5. Delete the software deployment directory

I have to say it's a surprise. Most of the time, when I can't get Windows Update to work, it takes hours or days, and I have to skip a bunch of basketballs to finish it.

If the troubleshooter does not work properly, the first thing to do is to clear the old update files. To do this, restart your computer in safe mode first. I could clear the Windows Update file by stopping the Windows Update service, but I found it was just a more reliable experience to make sure it wasn't running in the background, so I went straight into safe mode.

From there, open File Explorer, navigate to the Windows folder, and delete the folder named SoftwareDistribution.

Alternatively, you can type RMDIR / S / Q at the command prompt, which recurses throughout the subdirectory and deletes the corresponding update file without additional confirmation prompts.

At this point, continue and restart the computer and try to update again. If you disable the Windows Update service, remember to turn it on before attempting to update it.

6. Download feature updates from MICROSOFT

If Windows Update still fails, you may want to consider going to Microsoft to download the update directly. Bookmarking the download windows10 page on the Microsoft Windows site may not be a bad idea.

If you are using Edge, you can download the update:

Continue and fully download the update. I suggest clicking Save instead of Run so you can get the update and reapply it if you encounter any obstacles.

After downloading, run the update image. I hope you will set it all up.

7. Download cumulative quality / safety updates

If there are recent feature updates (as in my case), the above strategy may be effective. But there are actually two kinds of updates: functional and quality / safety updates. Ed has a good explanation for the differences in this article. Ed explains that most "update failure" messages are related to security / reliability updates.

For those, you must go to the Microsoft Update directory, search with the KB number of the failed update, download the correct stand-alone distribution package, and then double-click to run it.

8. Run the WINDOWS system File Checker

If they all fail, it may be time to run the Windows system File Checker. This is a key hint for those who are familiar with using SFC (system File Checker) in Windows 7 and earlier. Now, starting with Windows 8, you need to first run a tool called DISM (deploy Image Services and Management).

Let's start there. First, open the command shell. Make sure you right-click the commands menu and run in elevated permission mode.

DISM is a very concise tool with many functions

Issue the command DISM / online / cleanup-image / restorehealth. This should help remove damage from the system components. Give it a few minutes to run. I hope you will have a successful result.

When you have finished running DISM, you can start SFC. In the same elevated privileges command window, continue and run SFC / scannow.

It turns out that SFC did find some errors, and it fixed it and then wrote to the CBS (component-based services) log.

Once you run DISM and SFC, you can restart. Then, try Windows Update again.

9. If all fails, please repair your WINDOWS installation

I hope you are happy to update Windows now. But if not, I still have a hammer left in my toolbox: fix your Windows installation itself. Windows provides in-place repairs and upgrades during installation.
