The process of upgrading AD is actually one of the links of upgrading the operating system attached to DC. Taking upgrading from Windows 2000 Server AD to Windows Server 2003 AD as an example, this paper briefly talks about the method of upgrading AD.

Upgrade domain

Before upgrading, you need to check whether the hardware configuration of the server meets the requirements of Windows Server 2003. A system compatibility check is also performed to confirm the current hardware configuration of the computer and whether the software version is compatible with the Windows Server 2003 series version.

The process of upgrading an AD domain is divided into two steps, namely, preparing the active directory and domain, and upgrading the master system. The specific upgrade steps are as follows:

1. Prepare active Directory and Domain

Before upgrading domain controllers running Windows 2000 Serve to Windows Server 2003 or installing Active Directory on * domain controllers running Windows Server 2003, you must ensure that servers, forests, and domains are ready. Prepare the forest and the domain by using the "adprep" command on the "schema operation host" and the "structure operations host", respectively, and the domain controller here is the "architecture operations host". This process includes checking the upgrade compatibility of the server, preparing the forest and preparing the domain, which can be done using the commands provided by the system.

Step 1 log in to the domain controller as Administrator and place the Windows Server 2003 installation CD in the CD drive. Type the following command line "adprep / forestprep" in the Command prompt window and enter, and a prompt message is displayed after a moment, as shown in figure 1.

Because QFE 265089 (included in Windows 2000 SP2 and later) prevents possible domain controller corruption.

Step 2 then type the command "C" and enter, and the system loads various items that need to be modified and completes the changes automatically. After a period of time, the forest-wide information is updated, as shown in figure 2.

(2) prepare domain

When the data from the preparation forest is replicated throughout the forest, you can prepare the domain for upgrade to Windows Server 2003. The domain preparation operation must be performed on the "structural operation host" of each domain in the forest, where the domain controller acts as the "structural operation host". Type the following command line "adprep / domainprep" in the Command prompt window and press enter to show that the global information has been successfully updated after a moment.

Chenchen Note: domain controllers running Windows 2000 Server cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2003 or domain controllers running Windows Server 2003 cannot be added to Windows 2000 domains before using adprep to prepare forests and domains in the forest.

When the data from the preparation domain is copied over the entire domain, upgrade the domain controller by running the "i386\ winnt32.exe" command on the Windows Server 2003 installation CD, which will actually be done during the upgrade of the primary system.

2. Upgrade the main system

Once you have the active directory and domain ready, you can upgrade the primary system.

Step 1: log in to the domain controller as Administrator, put the installation CD of Windows Server 2003 into the CD-ROM drive under the running state of Windows 2000 Server, and the installation CD runs automatically and displays the prompt message. In order to ensure that the set-up Windows 2000 Server machine is fully compatible with Windows Server 2003, it is recommended to run the system compatibility check program again to confirm the compatibility of the current system. Then click the finish / back button to return to the front screen.

Step 2 Click the "install Windows Server 2003 Windows Edition" button in the first screen, then open the "Windows installer" dialog box to ensure that the "installation type" drop-down box is the "upgrade (recommended)" option, and click the "next" button.

Step 3 Click the "I accept this Agreement" checkbox on the license Agreement tab and click the "next" button. Then type your valid Windows Server 2003 installation key in the your Product key tab, and click the next button.

In the following time, there will be a series of operations such as downloading updated installation files, copying files, upgrading domain controllers, etc., but there will be no setup prompts such as user information, network configuration, services, and so on during the upgrade process. therefore, the whole installation process can be completed automatically without user intervention, but the upgrade process is longer.

3. Verify the upgrade effect

Now that the server has been upgraded from Windows 2000 Server AD to Windows Server 2003 AD, is the upgraded system normal, whether the user data is intact, and whether the user can log in to the domain smoothly from the workstation? These answers can only be obtained through verification.

Step 1 Click start / Administrative tools / Active Directory users and computers in the upgraded Windows Server 2003 server to open the Active Directory users and computers window. In the left pane, expand the "Cce.com.cn (domain name) / Users" directory, and if you can see the list of users created in the original Windows 2000 Server domain, this means that the user's attribute information has been fully migrated to the Windows Server 2003 domain.

Step 2 expand the "Cce.com.cn (domain name) / Computers" directory in the left pane to see if the computers in the original domain have successfully migrated to the upgraded domain.

Step 3: log in to the upgraded Windows Server 2003 domain as an ordinary user to verify that you can log in normally and whether the permissions in the domain have changed after successful login.

If the above verification is correct, you can prove that AD has been successfully upgraded.
