Multi-line lidar is a laser rotary ranging radar that simultaneously emits and receives multiple lasers. At present, there are 4 lines, 8 lines, 16 lines, 32 lines, 64 lines and 128 lines in the market. Multi-line lidar can identify the height information of objects and obtain 3D scanning images of the surrounding environment, which is mainly used in the field of self-driving.

In the field of self-driving, multi-line lidar mainly has the following two core functions:

3D modeling and environmental perception: the 3D model of the environment around the car can be scanned by multi-line lidar, and the surrounding vehicles and pedestrians can be easily detected by comparing the environmental changes of the previous frame and the next frame by using relevant algorithms.

SLAM positioning enhancement: synchronous mapping (SLAM) is another major feature. By comparing the real-time global map with the features in the high-precision map, it can enhance the positioning accuracy of the vehicle and realize autonomous navigation.

At present, the lidar used for self-driving is mostly concentrated in foreign countries, including Velodyne, Quanegy in the United States and IBEO brand in Germany. The multi-line lidar led by Velodyne is expensive, all above the level of ten thousand yuan (US dollars). It is difficult for ordinary car companies to bear such a high price.

In comparison, the cost of single-line lidar is much lower. Single-line lidar means that the beam emitted by a laser source is a single-line radar. At present, it is mainly used in the field of robots, mostly serving robots, which can help robots avoid obstacles. It has fast scanning speed, strong resolution and high reliability. Compared with multi-line lidar, single-line lidar responds more quickly in angular frequency and sensitivity, so It is more accurate in testing the distance and accuracy of the surrounding obstacles. However, single-line radar can only scan in plane, and can not measure the height of objects. At present, it is mainly used in our common sweeping robots, food delivery robots, hotels and other service robots.

Different from the multi-line lidar in the field of self-driving, the single-line lidar used in the robot field in China has been more mature, and the single-line lidar represented by Silan technology has reached a measuring radius of 40 meters. At the same time, it can effectively avoid the interference of ambient light and strong sunlight, and can be used stably indoors and outdoors. In addition, its ultra-thin, compact and lightweight body can be applied to more and larger scenes.

Generally speaking, the application scenario of multi-line lidar is more complex and requires higher performance, but its price is too expensive for most enterprises to bear. In comparison, the structure of single-line lidar is simpler, the cost is lower, it is easier to meet the needs of service robots, and it is more accurate in distance and accuracy.
