Shulou(Shulou.com)06/01 Report--
Users should try not to use simple words for WiFi passwords, and do not use the same password on multiple websites. Here are a few ways to improve your Wi-Fi:
1. Set the router to restart on schedule
If you're one of many people who have to restart their router often so it doesn't drop out, there's a solution. You can run some tests to make sure the problem isn't caused by heat, old firmware, or excessive downloads, but the easy way to fix the problem is to automatically restart once a day. You can do this using DD-WRT or regular old socket timers. When you're done, you shouldn't restart your router too often.
2. Converting old routers to WiFi repeaters
If there is still no help, you need to get a range extender for your family. They're not terribly expensive, but if you don't want to pay for another piece of hardware, you can actually turn an old wireless router into an extender with the DD-WRT firmware described above. Note that you may not be able to get a fast connection through the extender, but if you don't seem to be able to get WiFi on the edge of the house, then this will do the job cheaply.
3. Use DIY tips to increase your WiFi range
If your router still can't reach far enough, you can extend its range with simple DIY tricks. You can also use old beer cans or cooking filters to extend the range of the router. The results are exciting, and the method is able to get more distance from WiFi networks with minimal effort.
4. Control bandwidth usage applications
If someone in your home frequently engages in video chat, plays online games, torrents files, or uses services like Netflix, they may be hogging bandwidth and slowing down the internet for others. Fortunately, you can use a service called Quality of Service (QoS), or QoS for short, to dominate this bandwidth inventory so that the most important applications get the bandwidth they deserve.
5. Get rid of interference from other devices
Other routers are not the only things that can cause interference. Cordless phones, microwaves and other appliances may also drown out your signal. Buying a dual-band router can help solve this problem, but you can also buy cordless phones in other bands. If you don't want to buy new hardware, you can also try moving your router away from interfering devices.
6. Find the right wireless channel.
If you have neighbors, their routers may interfere with your router and cause signal degradation. Wireless routers can operate on multiple different channels, and you want your channel to be as free of interference as possible.
7. Find the perfect location for the router
Routers may be ugly, but that doesn't mean you should hide them behind a TV cabinet. If you want the best signal, you will need it in an open space, without any walls and obstacles. If the optimal location for your router is a space without a desk or flat surface, check if you can use its pre-installed mounting holes or third-party mounting brackets for wall mounting. Point the antenna vertically and lift the router if possible (attic is the best location). Finally, make sure it's centered in your home so you can get the best coverage at home.
