Shulou(Shulou.com)05/31 Report--
On the second day of the Snapdragon Technology Summit in 2021, Qualcomm launched a new Arm-based SoC for laptops and removable computers. Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 is the company's new high-end product, while Snapdragon 7c Plus Gen 3 is aimed directly at entry-level market segments. Devices equipped with these chips are expected to be available sometime in the first half of 2022.
Similar to last year's update, Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 is an incremental upgrade to the previous generation. Still, the company is touting significant improvements in performance and efficiency. More specifically, Qualcomm says the updated Kryo kernel will increase single-core CPU performance by 40% and multi-core performance by 85%. On the other hand, the new Adreno GPU provides a 60 per cent intergenerational boost.
In the past, we have seen the Snapdragon platform 8cx do it the way to Windows devices such as Galaxy Books and Surface Pro X. At the same time, the entry-level 7c has become a popular choice for midrange ChromeOS devices, such as the recently released Lenovo Duet 5 and HP X2 11.
Qualcomm's latest chip is expected to provide double-digit performance improvements over the previous generation, as well as some improvements in connectivity and AI. On the face of it, this seems promising, but if you want to know how the new flagship Windows on Arm chip will compete with competitors, the answer is a little complicated. Qualcomm said the 8cx Gen 3 was made on a 5nm process node, indicating that it used Arm's Cortex-X1 kernel or an improved Kryo 680design-rather than a newer Arm Cortex-X2. In this respect, it seems similar to its previous flagship mobile SoC Snapdragon 888. Still, the decision to abandon 7nm should mean better performance per watt. But just how powerful is this new high-end chip?
In terms of CPU performance, last year's Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 kept pace with ultra-local chips such as the low-power, 15W Intel i5 processor. This is a pretty good performance for Qualcomm, especially considering that the Snapdragon chip consumes only half the power at 7W.
