Super Retina XDR, which is why Apple named its new iPhone display Organic Light Emitting Diode technology. Sounds good, but despite its excellent color display and Dolby Vision support, it may be a step backwards for some users.

It has always been true that Apple has the ability to develop excellent smartphone displays. While Apple didn't partner with Samsung to make and develop their own displays, they always tried to provide something special for the displays.

The iPhone 12 now has an OLED display instead of the standard LED panel. Apple may have made this choice partly to provide the necessary contrast to Dolby Vision. This is the development of HDR, and Hollywood movies are also used in this way.

Our iPhone 12 review shows that the display has high color accuracy and brightness, and because of its high resolution, it can accurately display details. This is a real advantage for iPhone fans…isn't it?

The new technology comes with a caveat: OLED displays don't have dimmable background lighting, which means the entire display must be constantly turned on and off to simulate lower brightness. On the iPhone 12, the frequency of this condition is about 218 Hz, which can easily fatigue sensitive eyes.

LED displays typically have this problem only at very low brightness levels, whereas OLED displays use pulse width modulation at all but maximum brightness levels. Therefore, there will be a solution: so-called DC dimming can be used to reduce the voltage of each organic light emitting diode to achieve lower brightness. However, Apple doesn't seem to have plans to bring the technology to the iPhone anytime soon.

So while users can undoubtedly grab their iPhone 11(regardless of sensitive eyes), potential iPhone buyers would be better off trying out the phone's display first before taking the $900 smartphone home.
