Models show that wearing masks can significantly reduce the spread of coronavirus when the vast majority of people participate, but compliance is still a problem in countries such as the United States, where masks are seen as a political symbol. AI systems such as Uber and DatakaLab can help ensure the safety of passengers and drivers while reducing conflicts.

Apart from clarifying that the mask inspection system does not process biometric information and does not compare selfies with photos of drivers in the database, Uber is worryingly vague about the details of the system.

The company recently launched a Real-Time ID Check system designed to reduce fraud by regularly prompting drivers to submit selfies before driving, causing a transgender Iowa driver to miss about three days of work, including a lucrative vacation.

Some studies, such as a study published in December by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (U.S.National Institute of Standards and Technology), found that computer vision systems are more likely than white men to misidentify women and people of certain races.

In response to the Iowa driver incident, Uber said real-time authentication, supported by Microsoft's Azure cognitive service, eventually verified 99 per cent of drivers in a pilot in 2016. It also said that the new mask monitoring uses a separate system and does not use any real-time identity checking technology. However, it remains to be seen whether it is error-prone, especially when it is difficult for substitute drivers to make ends meet.
