2020-05-14 07:13 introduction: from May 18, drivers without masks will not be able to pick up passengers, and drivers who do not wear masks for many times may lose the opportunity to log on to Uber.
Yesterday, Uber announced that it would launch AI technology in its mobile app to monitor whether drivers are wearing masks. As part of a new list designed to ensure that drivers take safety measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the app will apply computer vision algorithms to drivers' selfies to detect the presence of masks on the driver's face.
However, cyclists do not need to follow the same process, but must make sure that the same precautions have been taken. And when their ride is over, messages in the app automatically remind them that drivers are wearing masks to cover their faces.
From May 18, drivers without masks will not be able to pick up passengers, while drivers who do not wear masks many times may lose the opportunity to log on to Uber.
Uber said the new system would not be implemented until at least the end of June and was designed to adapt to changing public health guidelines and regulations around the pandemic.
In a sign of a growing trend, France launched an experiment to integrate AI tools from start-up DatakaLab into the security cameras of the Paris subway system to check whether passengers were wearing masks.
Models show that wearing masks can significantly reduce the spread of coronavirus when the vast majority of people participate, but compliance is still a problem in countries such as the United States, where masks are seen as a political symbol. AI systems such as Uber and DatakaLab can help ensure the safety of passengers and drivers while reducing conflicts.
Apart from clarifying that the mask inspection system does not process biometric information and does not compare selfies with photos of drivers in the database, Uber is worryingly vague about the details of the system.
The company recently launched a Real-Time ID Check system designed to reduce fraud by regularly prompting drivers to submit selfies before driving, causing a transgender Iowa driver to miss about three days of work, including a lucrative vacation.
Some studies, such as a study published in December by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (U.S.National Institute of Standards and Technology), found that computer vision systems are more likely than white men to misidentify women and people of certain races.
In response to the Iowa driver incident, Uber said real-time authentication, supported by Microsoft's Azure cognitive service, eventually verified 99 per cent of drivers in a pilot in 2016. It also said that the new mask monitoring uses a separate system and does not use any real-time identity checking technology. However, it remains to be seen whether it is error-prone, especially when it is difficult for substitute drivers to make ends meet.
"in the first phase of the crisis, it was heartening to see our community unite with a sense of collective responsibility," Dara Khosrowshahi, chief executive of Uber, wrote in a statement. "as we move into the new normal, our goal is to encourage the same sense of collective responsibility: Uber, drivers, drivers, couriers and restaurants-we all have a role to play in ensuring each other's safety and health."
Uber also announced yesterday that at present, only three passengers are allowed to take each car in its product line, and passengers are prohibited from sitting in the front seats. The company also pledged $50 million in face masks, hand sanitizers and other cleaning products.
